desperately seeking help with linux
As I'm sure you already derived from the title of this post, I am a complete newb to the world of linux. I installed ubuntu after I was completely unable to get winblows to function. I have done a little wih it but not much. Normall I just use the computer to surf the web and type but I recently downloaded a movie that I have been unable to purchase however I need to use hjsplit to compile the files and make a dvd image to burn.
This is where I need help. I've downloaded the *.gz files to my Desktop for both hjsplit and the kylix archive (or whatever you call it) however, I can't seem to figgure out how to install these componants onto my computer.
Both *.gz files are saved on my Desktop and keeping in mind that I don't really know what I'm doing, can anybody tell me how to go about installing both the program and kylix on my computer either via terminal or symantic? If terminal I really need all out code lines because I really don't know much other than "su" allows me root access and "cd" takes me places and "ls" lists what is there.
Please help me if you can. I really want to learn but I have a hard time with the information I've found online.
Thanks in advance,
MM

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
Follow the instructions for the Kylix library which are:
unpack the files,
They are packed using tar/gunzip.
You can read the tar manual, `man tar`
Use your favorite archive manager or:
Kylix: tar -xvf <path>.-C /tmp/Kylixlib
HJ: tar -xvf <path> -C ~/.
Gnu/Linux is case sensitive.
Get a prompt, get root ( use `su`, or sudo bash if you are using Ubuntu ), then type /tmp/Kylixlib/*/install.sh.
If you get any errors along the lines of, permission denied, you forgot to use the su command.
Once you are done installing the kylix library and unpacking HJ, use ./HJSplittLX in your home directory to execute it.
If you can't get it to work, you could simply use the dos version with dosemu. Or, use wine/cedega.

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
In Ubuntu or GNOME-based systems, typically you can right-click and push "extract here."
From there, it's just about gaining super user powers and reading the README or INSTALL file inside that extracted folder.
And making sure you have build-essential.
sudo apt-get install build-essential

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
Copied from my post in the other thread which was moved here:
First off, your title is inappropriate. If you were asking about help with Linux, it'd be fine, but you're asking for help with Gnu(/Linux). Gnu (or Gnu/Linux) is an operating system, Linux is a kernel. If you told us which distribution of Gnu/Linux you were using, that'd be even better and more specific. You seem to be using Ubuntu (or maybe Debian, I don't know if they have synaptic as well).
So now that we're on slightly more stable ground, let's look at this: Do you really need to use those programs? If the movie doesn't work in Totem or VLC, you won't be able to uncompress it and burn it to a disc anyways. Have you tried installing the codecs for whatever format it is? Ubuntu includes most of these in the Multiverse repository, search for "gstreamer" in synaptic and install some of the plugins, if the right one is there.

I stated in the second sentence that I am using ubuntu. And going off the total newbness of my question, it could be derived that I am not aware of the importance of suck information in the thread title. Regardless, I assumed most knowledgeable linux users would be able to help as the friends I have that use linux seem to know quite a bit about most distros. Unfortunately, I am unable to get a hold of them. I wanted to get a broad spectrum of advice from the largest pool of users I could find hence the vagueness of the title.
To answer your question, yes I do need to use this program as I am not going to be watching this movie on my computer but would rather like to burn it to a dvd and watch it on my television. Obviously totem will not open the file as it has been split using hjsplit or some such program hence why I need to recompile the files and create a dvd image which I could then burn onto a disk and watch.
All I need to know is how to unpack the file containing hjsplit and how to install said program.
MM
P.S. thank you to those who have tried to help but I am still not getting it. :-/ I'm just going to bite my lip and start reading more and eventuall, hopefully, truely understand this.

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
You're still not getting it. You aren't seeking help with Linux. You're seeking help with Gnu.
What makes you think you need to use hjsplit? What sort of file specifically are you trying to burn to DVD? Have you checked the repositories for a program that will work?

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
Ubuntu (and all linux distros for that matter) has a built in function for merging files like hjsplit does. Just open the terminal and type "cat video.avi.001 video.avi.002 video.avi" and it will merge the 2 files and create video.avi.
Theres no need for hjsplit on linux for merging files. I don't know about splitting files though.

That isn't a "function", it's the program `cat', from the GNU package Coreutils.

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
Sorry for the confusion prometheum. Though, I still don't understand the difference between the two. Don't tell me though, I'm sure I can look it up easily eough.
As for the file type I'm trying to merge, They're .r00 through .r51 with one .rar
The reason for me thinking I need to merge them is because a friend told me. Though, I'm not entirely sure of his knowlege as of late.
So if I use that "cat" thingy, will it automaticly turn them into .avi even if that's not what they were originally? The torrent description said it was a dvd rip.
I dunno. I'm lost here. heh

Re: desperately seeking help with linux
Tell us the full filenames of what your trying to merge. I don't know what the hell your talking about. They have to have the same file extensions if your gonna merge them. You can't merge a .zip with a .rar and expect to be able to open it as an archive.
So it was a torrent but it was split into different files? Sounds weird to me usually video torrents are all one file since they don't need to split them into smaller files. Give us more information on what your trying to do cuz your confusing the hell outta me but I've done this type of shit before so I can probably help you.
