Arrow 'Flying ointment', and natural deleriants and hallucinogens (warning - long).

I've been curious about this substance for a long time, and have decided to try making some myself. I'm not interested in this for recreational potential per se, as in I don't want to go out and party, but I'm not aiming for a spiritual experience either. It's curiosity, and a desire to experience something completely otherworldly.

Some background first. Flying ointment is the name given to the mix of herbs and plants that witches allegedly used to induce sensations of flying or other out of body, out of mind experiences. I'm not one for the witchcraft side of it, but the experience side interests me greatly. The most common referenced ingredients are plants of the Solanaceae family, which contain a wide range of psychoactive alkaloids, most importantly the tropane alkaloids. Datura contains some of them, which quite a few people here are familiar with. Other plants of the family include deadly nightshade/belladonna, angel's trumpets (brugmansia) and henbane, and other ingredients include monkshood/wolfsbane, mandrake root and fly agaric mushrooms.

That said, living in the modern world we have some benefits that weren't available to Medieval European witches, and so I'm planning on adding other ingredients which they'd be unable to procure. My list of potential candidates include cannabis, psilocybe mushrooms (the magic variety), DMT-containing herbs and plants used in brewing ayahuasca such as B. caapi, Psychotria viridis/carthagensis, mimosa bark and chaliponga (contains 5-MeO-DMT as well), opium poppy pods, possibly one or more plants of the Pilocarpus family and possibly dream herb (C. zacatechichi), which is used to induce vivid and memorable dreams. Yes, I had to copy-paste half the names. The other benefit is a wealth of information courtesy of the internet, which is going to be seriously beneficial because I'm not a lifelong herbalist and need to be as careful as possible.

A lot of these plants can be deadly in the wrong doses. The risk appears to be lessened when you're taking them transdermally (through the skin) rather than orally, but I don't want to take any risks. Any risks apart from actually trying this stuff, anyway. I'm posting the plans here because there are a lot of seasoned drug users, psychonauts and general fuck-ups on this forum, and with something like this I think the more advice I can get the better, even if most of the expertise here isn't really herbal.

For the base, I plan to use beeswax and almond or apricot oil, as well as some jasmine and lavender oil because they're used as relaxants. I like all the smells involved. The proportions recommended vary, so I'm gonna combine them a little at a time until I find a proportion that gives a good consistency. I'm aiming to make quite a lot of the base, for two reasons; one, I don't want the active ingredients to be too concentrated, and two, I want to save some and not use it all at once. I'm gonna make up a very small batch of the pure base first, just to make sure it smells nice (seems strange, but I want to be in the best possible frame of mind for this).

As for the ingredients, they've been selected for the psychoactive compounds they contain, which is kind of the point. Belladonna is one of the key ingredients, containing atropine, scopolamine and hyascyamine. I'm going to use the root, because the variation in the levels of tropane alkaloids is lower than in the leaves. Pilocarpus plants are a maybe because they contain pilocarpine, which is used as an antidote to belladonna poisoning. However, I don't know if they'll relieve all the effects or just the potentially dangerous ones, and I can't find specifics on whether or not that'll also counter the hallucinations and delirium. Brugmansia, datura and mandrake also contain various tropane alkaloids, atropine being common to all of them. B. caapi contains MAOIs (harmine/harmaline), which potentiate the action of the DMT which is found in the plants traditionally used in ayahuasca. Fly agaric mushrooms contain ibotenic acid, which converts to the psychoactive muscimol when dried. You know about cannabis and psilocybe mushrooms, and if you don't, you're probably not going to be able to help much. Opium/morphine from the poppies apparently helps to counter some of the negative side effects of the atropine and suchlike.

This combination should produce a completely delirious trip of 2-3 days. Experience reports on the various components describe various trips lasting 24-72 hours, and obviously there are other shorter-acting constituents too like the mushies and weed. I've discussed this with two close friends who have a lot of drug experience who would both be willing to take turns trip-sitting me and making sure I don't hurt myself or anything, and I'm lucky enough to have the kind of family that I could tell my exact intentions to and explain what's going to happen. I have a safe environment and before embarking on this journey I'd spend a lot of time making sure that everything dangerous would be out of the way, I'm planning on eating a large meal not long before I begin (not too large, but filling and nutritious, I figure I won't be eating when I'm tripping) and keeping large bottles of water everywhere around. Food, water, a safe, comfortable and trusted environment, and responsible people around who know what's going to happen; those seem like good prerequisites to me.

I'm aware that these trips are not enjoyable in the same sense that mushroom or good acid trips are. Trip reports of deadly nightshade and other atropine-containing plants in particular usually sound rather unsettling and confusing with people with missing eyes being a recurring theme for some reason, datura trips are all over the place (and usually very poorly remembered, so I'm not going to use a lot), ayahuasca trips are intense and deep, really sound like another state of consciousness... the combination should be interesting, hopefully. Does anyone have any experience with a combination of two or more of the drugs above? I'm not looking to enjoy myself so much as to have an experience I'll never forget, although obviously I'd like to appreciate it instead of freaking out or dying or something.

As for taking it, I'm first going to apply a small quantity to some sensitive skin like the forearm or inside of the elbow to see if there are any adverse reactions. After a day, if there aren't any (and as long as I'm not feeling off baseline from the little dab), I plan to apply the ointment to pulse points, other thin skin and the good ol' genitals. I'm not going to cover myself, but I'm going to apply a fair bit. I'll work out the amount I should apply after I know exactly what I've put in it, with some input from you guys.

I think that's everything. I'm aware that this is one huge post, but hopefully people with something intelligent to contribute will actually bother reading it. Save the TL;DRs, I already know. I want to get this right, so I'm hoping some of you can help. Suggestions, criticisms, advice on dosage, experiences, whatever. I want to hear from you.

And of course, a full and comprehensive trip report shall be compiled and posted for your perusal.

I don't have anything experience/knowledge-wise to contribute, but I say go for it. You seem like you have thought this out very well and you will have people there who will make sure nothing happens. If you do decide to try this, good luck. That's all I can say.

I haven't researched it, but you might def. want to think twice about mixing somthing as toxic as atropine with an maoi. also, I would check to make sure DMT will absorb through the skin and still be active.

just things to think about

There's deadly nightshade, and there's black nightshade.

One contains the solanaceous tropanes. The other contains fuckloads of solanine, which in addition to also being as lethal as the muscarinic antagonists, will also counteract them and be counteracted by them, while leaving a clean, unopposed increase in nicotinic acetylcholine reception.

Know what you're doing before you step into a witches' brew.

I would call "tossing every psychoactive in a pot and hoping for luck" a very bad idea...

Again, I'm glad you figured this out - but are you prepared for things like the delerium, the total retrograde amnesia, and the inability to focus your eyes for the next six months?

There's a lot more dangers than JUST being chased down a busy freeway by invisible people...

Suggestion : work until you know what ALL you're getting into in throwing yourself on a week-long datura vision.

Criticism : why the fuck are you trying to throw "just any drug I can find" into the pot at the START of your exploration?

Advice on dosage : smoke the leaf to get an idea of potency. After you've figured that out, divide the number of leaves by the number of portions of fat, and...

Experiences : I had no desire to go that deep with datura. The subdeleriant plateau was wisdom enough for me.

It can vary by individual plant and strain far more than one might expect.

Make sure your trip-sitters videotape everything for the highlight video. 'n don't worry, whatever else happens, they WON'T respect you after this, lol...

Lightbulb Re: 'Flying ointment', and natural deleriants and hallucinogens.

I'd not finished researching by a long way, and that list was just a list of potential ingredients. I've done more research and cut it down. More on that later.

JoePedo, as far as I'm aware deadly nightshade, Atropa belladonna, is what I want, and I can tell the plants apart without difficulty. Black nightshade doesn't grow around here anyway. As for dosage, I want this to be as much a trip into the complete unknown as possible. I'm going to take averages of doses from as many sources as possible, so I shouldn't be taking far too much or far too little of anything.

I'm aware of the possible medium/long-term side-effects. I wouldn't say I'm prepared for them exactly, but I don't think you can be prepared for something like that. The only thing I'd really be worried about is the cycloplegic effects, but I've not seen anything that says those can persist for maybe 3-4 days after the end of the experience at most. Thanks for your advice, by the way, you were one of the people I was hoping would respond to this thread, you know about fucking everything.

From what I've now gathered, muscimol and solanaceous alkaloids have very similar properties, but seeing as I can't really procure fly agaric easily (within the next day, anyway), I'm gonna leave it out. After reading up on interactions between MAOIs and pretty much everything (thanks, double dosed on sunshine) I've decided to leave out the B. caapi (harmine/harmaline), which means there's little point in including the plants containing DMT or 5-MeO-DMT, which I thought about again and realised was a ridiculously stupid idea anyway. The opium poppies are definitely staying in after further research; if the active dose of atropine or the other solanaceous alkaloids is greater than the corresponding active dose of opium/morphine then the deleriant and hallucinogenic properties of the alkaloids remain, but several of the negative side-effects (such as elevated heart and respiration rate and increased body temperature) are countered to some extent. Atropine and co. also counter some of the negative side-effects of the morphine, mostly shit like nausea.

I think the combination I'm going to go for is Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade), mandrake root, opium poppy pods, psilocybin mushrooms, henbane (stinking nightshade), datura and cannabis. I've decided to omit poison hemlock because it can be fatal in much lower and less predictable doses than any of the other ingredients. The base will be a combination of pure natural beeswax and apricot oil. Far closer to true Medieval flying ointment than the prospective ingredients above, with the exception of the datura, mushies and weed. Those last two aren't really necessary since they're shorter-acting, but I figure it'll be interesting.

I need to acquire deadly nightshade (I'm going to use leaves for ease of collection), henbane and apricot oil. I'm going to get the two plant materials tomorrow morning, and the oil tomorrow afternoon. I've got everything else. The datura is in the form of Datura metel seeds which I'm going to loosely crush. The mandrake root I'm planning on grating. I'm planning on chopping the mushies fairly finely, crushing the poppy pods and giving the cannabis a slightly grind. I'm not crushing, chopping or grinding any of it too small because I want to be able to sieve out all of the miscellaneous plant material, which in turn is because I don't want to be using an ointment that contains little bits of mandrake or weed. I'm going to try to make the ointment thin enough to be able to pass it through a fine sieve, but thick enough that it's not runny or sloppy or anything.

Once I've got the oil tomorrow afternoon I'm going to start making the base and adding the ingredients. Advice is to keep the ointment over as low a heat as possible that'll keep it liquid, and let it simmer for a while. I'm thinking 24 hours will more than do the trick.

EDIT: Oh, and I plan on writing out a list of all the raw ingredients, their active ingredients and the exact doses administered in the ointment before I begin. I'll give it to my sitter, and if worst does come to worst (which it shouldn't) and an ambulance has to be called it'll let the paras know exactly what's happening. /EDIT

Any more thoughts?

I seriously doubt it will be fun, but that's not what I'm aiming for. If anything, trips from tropane alkaloids sound more confusing and nightmarish than datura trips. I've never experienced anything like it before, and that's why I want to do it. I want as much variety of experience as possible.

One of the things I hope to bring out of this thread is a workable procedure, a safe doseage and a comprehensive report of the effects. Maybe someone else will be interested in it too.

Datura will scar your mind if you can manage to remember it. It's not good. It's not fun. An experience to have? Sure, if you are solid in your self, and in your sanity. Everything should be experienced at least once, but no matter how ready you think you are, you most certainly are not.

I've done datura three times, and waited over 5 years till the third time, smoked an extract, and said fuck this after seeing the world peel away to reveal a rotting core.

Man, I meant to ask you about this for forever, your experience with smoked datura extract that is. You described your experience in like 3 sentences in some thread loooong ago, and it was really interesting. Please, if you have a spare moment, describe that experience in greater detail. I liked your comparsion of datura trip to "lifting a huge old rock to find nasty bugs n shit crawling to hide from sunlight" but instead of the rock, it was your reality that was lifted. I know what its like to contemplate bad trips, so I can understand if you dont want to think about that moment. How long did it last? how big/how many hits did you take? I'm not sadomasochistic but I would put myself through that just to experience what you did. After all, smoking datura extract builds character :)

Pretty much.

And as for my experience, fuck it, I'll give some detail, I did a solvent extraction, forget what solvent, I think methanol, who knows. All records have been lost like five times since then.

Anyway I took about three hits, two or three, out on my back porch with my brother, and held them in pretty much like weed. The first one, I felt funny. The second hit, I felt as if a trip was coming on, that coming up feeling you get on LSD kinda, and the third hit just sort of blam changed things, changed what I saw. Just no words for it really. After that, I handed the pipe to my brother, told him you be fucking careful, and went and slept for 12 hours, made myself sleep, just because I didn't want to think about what I saw, and the implications it had on life.

When I think about the overall vibe I get, and the emotions I feel during tripping, sort of combine each drug, lsd shrooms, datura, dmt etc, I get the feeling that the whole god damn thing is random and pointless. Of course, it isn't. Nothing is, but it sure as fuck feels like that sometimes. Then again, maybe it's just my state of mind at the moment, my head hasn't been right for a couple days due to personal reasons.

All I need now is the oil for the base, by the way. I'll update in a few hours when I begin making this stuff.

I've got a small test batch going. A 2:1 ratio of beeswax to apricot oil seems to produce a nice consistency, although I've not let it set yet so I might need to add more oil. Most of the ingredients look like I'll be able to get them out easily except the weed, which is breaking up far too small. I think the mushies might dissolve if I leave this stuff over heat all night too. I've nicked a little adjustable electric food-warmer thing from downstairs which is up warm enough to keep everything from setting, but not much higher than that. It's getting a greenish tint to it. I think I'm going to wait about an hour and then apply a little bit to parts of my skin and see if I get any allergic reactions to it, or any off-baseline effects. If all goes well I can leave the ointment on the heat overnight and tomorrow, get a good night's sleep tonight and apply it properly early tomorrow evening.

Ilovechronic, I think the 'not knowing you're hallucinating' aspect of belladonna combined with the mindfuck aspect of datura, pretty colours of mushies and general weirdness of the rest of it will make for one powerful experience.

I also intending on making about five times more than I think I need, firstly in case the first application isn't strong enough, secondly in case I want to do it again (which I doubt, and which I think will be an indication the first application wasn't strong enough), thirdly in case someone else I know wants to do it (which I don't think they will), fourthly to keep a little keepsake sample of and fifthly in case any of you guys want some through the mail ;).

I like your idea, it's nice to see some appreciation for traditional shamanic methods.

Ever read The Teachings of Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda? I understand it's been bashed in anthropological circles for not being strictly scientific, but I think there is a lot of useful information there regarding the use of psychoactive plant materials.

According to the teachings, you would be wise to start with a reduction of locally grown datura root. The leaves are considered to induce much stronger visions that are not suitable for the uninitiated. I think that ritual is very important for the proper use of such materials, I know it sounds unscientific, but scientific objectivity does not yet fit into the world of subjective experience. Read the book.

Just my two cents, I support your decision whatever it is and wish you good tidings, but PROCEED WIH CAUTION!

Alright, a small patch of 90-minute-heated ointment was applied to the inside of my elbows, the softest bit of my neck and my balls. It's ever so slightly tingly, and quite cooling. 90 minutes later and nothing. No redness, no allergic reactions, no itchiness, no visual distortion at all and no perceptual distortion as far as I can tell (although with these compounds, you often can't tell, so I might be tripping balls in a really boring manner, thinking I'm actually typing out this post while I'm lying curled up in a ball in my hallway or something). If anything, my skin feels really nice and smooth where I applied the ointment (I washed it off with warm water now), it's definitely softer than the surrounding skin. Bonus.

I've got the full ointment going now. 900g of beeswax and about 400ml of the apricot oil, an eighth of fairly good ground bud, the same weight of chopped, dried mushies, 26 mostly dried and shredded atropa belladonna leaves (12g or so), 260 crushed datura metel seeds (again about an eighth, 3.5g), mostly dried and shredded henbane leaves & a flower (~10g) and 15g dried and ground mandrake root. I've also got a solution on the go using more oil and enough poppy seeds to make a few cups of opium tea (a cup being enough to get one person nicely out of it once time), which I'm planning to add separately because there's too much to put in the ointment on their own 'cos I don't want to have to fish out a tonne of seeds. I think I've used too much base, but I added most of the ingredients before I realised I didn't actually want a kilo and a half of psychoactive ointment. I think I'm going to have to apply a thin layer over most of my body for this, because a thick layer won't absorb well and won't be concentrated enough.

EDIT: I came across a vial of 20x salvia that I'd forgotten about and considered chucking it in, but figured it would be counterproductive. /EDIT

This seems to be about five times too much for a single application that would lead to an intense, completely delirious trip, given what little I can find on transdermal absorption. I'm going to apply roughly a tenth of what I'm planning to apply as a test, probably on my chest or back, from which I expect to be a little off-baseline but in a functional mental state. I'll use this as a guideline for how much to apply.

Activepsycho, although I think a traditional shaman wouldn't be particularly impressed with my spiritual mindset (or lack of thereof), but I'm glad to have your support. I haven't read the Teachings, but I will take your advice and read some of them tonight to see what they have to say. I've read through a few extracts already and find some pieces interesting philosophically, although not on the spiritual level. Unfortunately my available datura is in seed form (well, it's now in crushed-seed-in-warm-ointment form), and as unwise as I know it is, I want as little prior experience as possible. What I'm aiming for is something as far removed from reality as possible, and to experience a little of it would link the experience with my current subjective reality. I hope that nakes sense.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I'll check on this thread again tomorrow and hopefully update when I'm about to begin. Wish me luck (if you're kind), and don't expect to hear from me again for a little while after that!

Since you asked for my opinion, I'd say this is a seriously bad idea.

Dosage would be impossible to determine, and in the event of a serious--i.e., life-threatening--mishap, EMT's would be pretty much at a loss as to how to proceed.

I suggest not fucking doing this, or getting people to strap you to a toilet with no pants on if you do. Scratch that, just don't fucking do it. Being in a state of mind where you're bombarded by a slew of chemicals acting upon you in subtle and profound ways but from different angles will make you susceptible to believe anything you see and leave you battered, confused, hospitalized or dead.

If you're going to throw all these things in a fucking pot to try and experience what witches did in the dark ages then I suggest going EXACTLY by the recipe that was provided, not adding a bunch of shit that will most likely send you into a psychotic state of destroying yourself, and anything you can get your hands on.

People honestly think they're invincible right up to the point that they can't look back, that is when their ego is broken down and all hell breaks loose, since usually it's the stubborn will of their ego bringing them whatever sense of confidence they have. Once you start questioning yourself in a state where logic fails to tread, your subconscious unearths things you'd wish were not possible.

All in all, this is suicide. If you're not an extraordinary human being don't do it, especially if you have any sort of expectations in mind. Those will only kill you slowly as you begin feeling the effects of this strange brew you're planning to create.

Later.

This "flying ointment" probably won't work very well because the effects of the shrooms, the weed, and the DMT will wear off extremely quickly leaving the OP with a nasty mix of belladonna and datura-induced delirium. Also, the effects of the DMT might wear off before all of the others have a chance to kick in and the effects of the THC will probably wear off before the effects of the magic mushrooms finish.

You'd have more luck tossing out the shitty belladonna and datura and just eating mushrooms, then smoking weed and DMT while tripping. The ointment shit just won't work...

Although I'm not going to pretend that I am an expert. I could be wrong and if someone who has more experience with the above substances says I am wrong, they're probably right.

I'm starting later than planned. I'll be doing it not long after I make this post. The ointment's turned out beautifully, for anyone who's interested, I don't have a camera but my sitter (who's here now) does and I asked him to bring his to take some pictures of it. He's promised not to film me.

Bonner, I'm expecting the weed and mushies (DMT-containing shit has been removed from the recipe) to wear off a lot more quickly than the atropine and suchlike, although since the application's transdermal I'm hoping it'll last longer than smoking/eating the compounds. It'll take time for everything to absorb through the skin, I reckon I should get 3-4 hours of effects from those two. Based on not a lot, though. Transdermal THC isn't terribly effective anyway from what I've read, although I can't find any reports of high doses. At some point in the future I'm interested in experimenting with transdermal application of other drugs, I definitely want to try it with a good dose of weed.

2007, the problem is that no precise recipes for these flying ointments exist, and that there are hundreds of different reports of ointments using different ingredients. It's nigh-on impossible to know exactly what to do, this is an experiment that hopefully can provide some proper information. I appreciate your concern, but I'm about to start this and I'm not turning back now. I hope I come through it sane.

Arms, although I've taken care to try to work out sensible doses (for my purpose), I've got a sheet written out with every detail of what's in the ointment, as well as the suggested antidotes (in case the paras don't know what to do), the time I'm going to take it (a little more than 5 minutes from now) and a bunch of other stuff. Hopefully it won't come to that, although my sitters both know roughly what to expect (as far as you can know, but every trip report of these compounds has been thoroughly studied).

SN, I'll pass the message along if I remember. Half unlit, I'm pretty close to my family, and they've done their share of crazy drug-related shit. They understand.

Everyone else, thanks for your interest and advice. You'll have to wait for a report, but I promise one that's as thorough and detailed as possible when I'm through with all this.

Fuck, I'm nervous.

Here goes. Bye.

I don't think it will absorb through his skin significantly, so I think if he trips at all it'll be barely unless he used something like DMSO. Rubbing it up your asshole might work LOL but I don't think rubbing it on your body will do much at all. I don't even believe the topic starter really has these drugs or any intention of obtaining and using them.

One of the experiences he linked to was about a cocktail much like the one he's taking. From that person's report, I'd say he'll probably come back saying "I don't remember anything but a vague green blob." :p

Fascinating idea, though. Here's hoping he's okay and comes back with an interesting story. :)

well i'm alive and didn't have to go to hospital oranything. i don't feel quite right but i think i'm getting better. vision's mostly okay only a bit blurry but i keep seeing shades of things i saw out of the corner of my eye and in my mind. i have a new perspective on things. i'll write out what happened some other time because i'm not really up to it right now and my frist sitter took notes on what i was doing too so i can post those. i have very vivid memories of the start but i lost a lot of time where i have no memoty of anything which i was expecting. i wouldn ot recommend this but i would not change the fact thast i did it.

^ Heh, as tempting as it is...

I feel a bit better, I slept again. The whole thing lasted from Friday afternoon to late Sunday night, I started to normalise near the end of that night according to my mate. Slept, woke up, showered (which was horrible for some reason, felt like I was being stabbed with needles and I felt a little scared), made the post (saw a post-it note in my room saying "tell Totse", heh) and went back to bed. That extra sleep made all the difference, methinks. My eyes are still a bit strange, still getting random flashes of things from the trip and it's still hard to focus on detail unless I get close to things. I feel pretty spaced out, but that's just normal for me after any drug use.

I still can't be bothered to write a full write-up, I'll wait 'til I get the shit my sitter wrote as well (tomorrow hopefully) before I post them anyway. But a bit about it; I got what seem to be the typical early-stage effects of belladonna and co., talking to people who aren't there and thinking I'm somewhere else completely, but having no idea I'm hallucinating. I was crawling and walking around a bit, but only really in circles and when I tried to get out (a few times) I went completely passive whenever my sitter put his hand on my shoulder and led me back to my makeshift nest. A bit later I started to get cold and retreated into myself, literally inside myself in an attempt to stay warm. I was massively conscious of all the inner workings of my body. I was actually quite fascinated by this point. Then everything got very cold, very dark and quite frankly terrifying. I saw everything in my body slow down and stop, then rot and fade. I was absorbed into the earth and became one with the planet, but the planet died in much the same way, and was absorbed into... into something that made sense at the time, but that I don't think I can put into words right now. I witnessed what I think was the end of the universe (more than the universe though, a universe of universes, something more than infinite) and experienced the most overwhelming, crushing loneliness (loneliness isn't a strong enough word) I've ever felt. I was left when nothing else was, except I wasn't even existent, I wasn't conscious or anything. I'll try explain better when I post it up proper.

Your experience of your self rotting, similar to stupid noob's experience of a rotting planet reminds me of the similarities of DMT and guides through outer space.

A friend of mine told me about a mushroom and MAOI extract (deadly combination) experience where he felt like there was a presence giving him the choice to live or die. He thought it was a good opportunity to experience the afterlife, since he felt that his life energy would dissipate into the subatomic grid of energy and he would become an infinite, eternal, omnipotent being of energy. After thinking about his friends and family, he chose life. Woke up the next morning with a hazey recollection. At a music festival he went to, he met a guy who broke his back snowboarding. This guy had a very similar experience, where he was given the choice to die and become eternal energy or to live. The snowboarder chose to live after thinking about how blessed his life really was. He doesn't even walk with a limp now.

The only thing I can imagine as far as the similarities is that these particular chemicals affect particular, specific regions of the brain, so naturally, there will be recurring themes or certain ideas among people. But the distinctive details of a "world view" rotting away is really interesting.
