| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Geek Squad Wifi Setup
Ok my family is going to be looking into setting up Wifi and we were at Best Buy and the Geek Squad said they could set up a Wifi system networked between 4 computers. They said they would do this for about 300 bucks. This includes setup, and some kind of encryption process that they say will block intruders. My question now, is there any way that I could do it on my own. Possibly a guide? Probably should have posted in DIY but thought i would get better results here.

I know, they did say you could DIY but then it wouldn't be secure. They said they would double encrypt it and yaddi yadda. I mean if i do it myself. Will it be secure? How will I know? I'am a noob to the whole Networking and Security issue so sorry.

Re: Geek Squad Wifi Setup
Well, obviously Geek Squad isn't going to tell you you can do it yourself and secure it because they want to make money. You can easily go out and buy a router, it will tell you how to set it up(It gives you the router IP to connect to, which many have step by step setups) and you can choose security on your own. As long as you choose something stronger than WEP, you will have a secure wifi setup.

OK, so basically your saying I don't need Geek Squad to be secure? They made it sound like they could only do it. Our family is pretty tech savy so you think theres some online guides on how ot secure your wifi network?

If you're really concerned about security, use WPA encryption.

Re: Geek Squad Wifi Setup
Lol, "we can double encrypt your wireless"? What fucking idiots.
It's piss easy to set up secure wifi. Don't use WEP, WEP is insecure. Use WPA2 or if you have to, WPA. It'll be an option in your router and it'll be easy to turn on. Every OS that I know of auto-detects the type of network you're trying to connect to and asks for the key, so (with WPA) just put in the passphrase you used for the router. A good site to generate passphrases is http://grc.com/passwords.htm .
Never have geek squad set anything up, they're useless. They only exist because people are told (mostly by them) that computers are black mysterious things that nobody can understand. That's a complete lie, and it's one that they tell regularly so that they can keep profiting off of it.

IIRC they were just recording people in showers and copying their porn/warez.
