Can I run 4gigs of memory on Windows XP pro?
Or does it depend on the motherboard? I heard that using regular Windows XP Pro (not the x64 edition) limits you to 3gigs. And when I look on newegg, I cannot find the x64 edition anywhere, so will I have to use vista?

Re: Can I run 4gigs of memory on Windows XP pro?
Microsoft has made the (in my opinion foolish) decision to stop selling retail copies of XP. If you want to buy windows, your only options are Vista-based. If you want XP, it's trivial to find a copy on bittorrent.

Common error. It is not a limitation of 32 bit operating systems.

Re: Can I run 4gigs of memory on Windows XP pro?
There is a technical limitation on RAM to only 4GB of memory on the x86 architecture. I don't remember the exact details of why, but it was made a long time ago when a common amount of ram to have was about 4KB. The new limitation on x64 is about 128TB or something crazy like that.
So yes, you need a 64 bit OS, and I recommend just downloading XP 64 through torrents. Microsoft doesn't really give a shit.

Yes, actually it is, you dumb asshole. The contents of a single integer register can store the address of any datum in the computer's virtual memory. The total number of addresses in the virtual memory – the total amount of data the computer can keep in its working area – is determined by the width of these registers. A 32-bit register means that 2^32 addresses, or a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, can be referenced. 64-bit architecture effectively increases the memory ceiling to 2^64 addresses, equivalent to approximately 17.2 billion gigabytes of RAM.
Quod erat demonstrandum, bitch.
