Some plumbing systems in some areas of some countries have this thing where you're supposed to throw the TP in the basket next to the toilet... the plumbing system is such that TP can actually clog the pipes for the whole neighborhood, so it's really a community effort.

Uhh yeh, i'd flush used toilet paper........ is this even a debatable point? The only time I haven't flushed it is when using squat-toilets which don't flush in the mountains in Nepal, in which case I think they burn/bury it. The locals use a bucket and water anyway, but i'm not hardcore enough for that.... :o

If I'm at a friends house, I'll wipe and throw it in the trash can just for giggles... knowing that long after I leave, his bathroom will smell like my shit for hours or days after I leave, and even if he does find it... he's stuck picking it out and flushing it.

I also do this in public bathrooms, especially gas stations/fast food... in fact, I don't even really make a point of hitting the toilet or not period in these places... just let the chips fall where they may.

In my own home though, my bathroom is immaculate. Toilet paper of course goes down the toilet and I clean everything and I never miss in my own toilet... just something about other people being forced to clean up my shit just makes me feel good.

I think it all stems from when i was working at a thrift store and mexicans would come in every day and shit in the sinks/urinals. I figure if everyone else is getting a kick out of it, I might as well.

I must've cleaned at least 50 pounds of shit out of those sinks/urinals over my 2 years at that hell hole job.

In most every latin american country you cannot flush toilet paper. You have to throw it in the bin beside the toilet. Needless to say, it smells terrible so most people will empty the bin daily. There are some high class resorts and hotels that have modern style plumbing, but they're definitely not the norm.

Why can these Latin American sewer systems handle a big greasy burrito generated turd, but clog up with a little bit of weak paper?

It's at the consumer end, for what I think are three or four reasons. Water-flush toilets are surprisingly delicate creatures -- they need to be connected to drain pipes of specific sizes and laid at exact slopes (too flat and they clog; too steep and the liquids drain faster and the solids clog) and made from certain materials connected in specific ways; they need TP manufactured to specific tolerances (ever tried flushing a wad of paper towels?); and they need reliable and fairly pure water sources. In many houses in the developing world, several of those factors won't be there -- smaller outflow pipes, laid a bit too haphazardly and with too many bends; water supply that comes and goes; TP of uncertain origin; and so on.

But feces is water-soluble, so even a very imperfect system can tolerate poop being flushed down it; the less soluble TP (especially imperfect TP that might be too tough or too thick), feminine hygiene products, used condoms, and other goodies will cause clogs where poop won't. Hence the trashcan next to the toilet and the signs saying "don't flush the paper!"

Of course, at some point that prohibition becomes cultural rather than simply practical, and even in houses with perfectly-functioning modern toilets that can take anything you throw at them, you will still see the TP bins. I have even seen those TP bins in outhouses, where there is no flushing apparatus whatsoever.

Flush when you think it's getting full enough to flood it (this should never happen if everyone flushes when they're done.. if you're worried about nature then get one of those toilets that uses more water for shit, less for piss). I come from a large family as well, but if you don't use a ton of toilet paper you should be fine.

If it really worries you, walk to the nearest restaurant and use theirs. :p

I used to waste a lot of toilet paper when I was a kid, but as I got older I began to use it more economically. IDK why, maybe I'm just naturally getting more fucking miserly as I age*. Well whatever the reason I've now got using toilet paper down to origami-like efficency.

OP, in Pakistan i can pretty much say you can flush it down the toilet however, we don't use Toilet paper unless we are staying in some hotel.

Water + Left hand does the job pretty well IMO.

Yeh just flush. Dont use a massive handful of toilet paper, maybe 10-12 sheets, but it depends on the size if the sewer pipe(some are 4" and some are 5-7" in aus), smaller are obviously easier to clog.

It all depends on your plumbing. As a child, we always flushed the paper down the toilet. When I was 9 we moved into a house built in the 60's with shitty as fuck plumbing. A couple of consecutive flushes with more than 3 wads of toilet paper each will clog the toilet. Pretty brutal.
