The Mist
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0884328/
Just got done it. Its a good one. Bizarre magazine film of the month, August 2008 issue.
Bottom Line - Equal helpings of blood and banter make this one a modern classic.
Real nice TWIST! at the end.

Anyone who thought that was a good way to end the film has bad taste.

Re: The Mist
Pretty open and shit for a 2007 horror movie. Wonder when Saw 34 comes out... lol.

The movie focuses on an old man reading a story to an old woman in a nursing home. The story he reads...

I doubt all the extasy in the greater Toronto area will EVER make me fall in love with those chicks.

I guess my point was, if you knowingly go in to watch a horror movie and then bitch about the not so happy ending, then maybe you should have used a little common fucking sense when selecting a movie to watch.

My problem wasn't that it was unhappy. My problem was that it was fucking retarded to the point of being comical. You've got this all-encompassing thick mist with unimaginably viscious monsters in it. The protagonists drive out into the middle of nowhere, don't refuel, don't have any destination in mind, and then they kill themselves when they run out of gas. Then, right after killing his son and friends, the military magically appears (in the middle of nowhere, mind you) and the mist suddenly disappears.
It was shamefully idiotic. If they had ended it with Tom Jane walking out into the mist after killing his family, even that would have been a decent ending (pointless, depressing, and stupid, but still decent). However, the current ending is basically the film equivalent of Goaste-ing the entire audience.
Last thing: People that are obsessed with depressing or nihilistic endings to horror movies are fucking morons that need to grow up. Sometimes such endings work, sometimes they don't.

They drove around for miles and miles for an undetermined amount of time before finally running out of fuel. Don't you think that after all that you would've thought that maybe the whole world was covered with that fog full of those creatures? The ending wasn't perfect, but it was still a pretty good ending. A long shot from being shamelessly idiotic.

Yeah, exactly. Which is why I thought the military magically appearing a second later (or at all) was just really sloppy writing. It also would have been nice to at least show them stopping at a gas station, or attempting to stop. As is, the movie just presents it as though they are driving in a straight line without any type of basic survival plan.
Even though Stephen King's version had a hopeful ending, I also think it did a great job of simultaneously capturing the hopelessness of the situation. When you read the novella, there's no doubt that the entire region (possibly the entire world) has been consumed by the unstoppable mist. That's was the point behind that insanely huge creature; it wasn't just intended to be a cool monster, but to show that the world had changed beyond repair. So, the book's ending was hopeful in the sense that the characters had a plan and weren't ready to give up, but it also implied that they ultimately were fucked. Overalll, I thought that was a much more logical (in the realm of the story) and chilling conclusion than the movie's ending.
To be clear, I liked most of the movie, but...the ending just ruined it for me. The fact that Darabont was apparently oblivious to the plot inconsistencies it raised also pissed me off.

Re: The Mist
I think the problem people have with it is. That the four most survivalistc(?) people in the entire movie pile into a car and 5 minutes after they run out of gas they choose suicide? I agree with above poster even, just showing tom walk into the mist and fade to black woud have been better.

Re: The Mist
Loved the Dark Tower reference at the beginning. Also, rewatched this recently while NOT high as it wasn't as good. Try watching it while high on weed - you'll have a lot of really deep insight into the human condition/stress situations/the power of religion - quite good.
