Default Is the hemp conspiracy really true?

I know a lot of people say that DuPont paid the gov't tons of money to help make hemp illegal. Supposedly the technology for making plastics from oil would have been obsolete because you can make the same shit out of hemp.

People seem to cite this as a reason for hemp being made illegal, but I thought it was pretty much just a racist thing because they like to stereotype marihuana users as mexicans, shady black jazz musicians, and other "degenerates"

So, is it plausible or just speculation?

I think there were a lot of separate reasons, the dupont thing being one of them ..

To go into detail, hemp was previously used a lot in ropes for sailing ships, and had been for a very long time - the fibres from hemp are tough and don't degrade with water or sunlight, dupont invented new plastics that could be used for ropes, and wanted to take away competition .. recognizing that hemp also contained psychoactive THC they set about building up a negative reputation for it to take away competition..

Hence the idea to make people so scared to try marihuana and develop their own personal opinions of it because they thought it might make them go crazy and butcher their whole family with a dull machete?

It would be cool to ask someone that would have been around back then what it was like and what their opinions were on the situation back then and how they might be different now.

My grandpa would have been 23 when pot was made illegal, too bad he passed away years ago.

You guys do know that it's neigh on impossible to get high off of hemp, right? True, it contains trace amounts of THC, but you'll have much better luck getting high off of nutmeg. They may say that it's illegal for drug purposes, but that reasoning doesn't stand up to any scruitiny.

I don't think anyone was saying that ..
Commercial hemp is bred to contain extremely low amounts of THC (around .5%), but what was being talked about is dupont trying to get marijuana illegalised and thus hemp as they are essentially the same plant/species, at that time they probably did have large amounts of THC as they weren't bred specifically not to.

Usually it's the government paying DuPont. I don't believe paying the government would do any good, but paying advocacy groups and so forth that want to ban hemp is perfectly legal.

I would be disappointed if a company didn't do this when it was in their interests. Why wouldn't they? Wouldn't you if you were running the company? Why not?

Really the question is, were DuPont smart enough to do this. I believe, from what I've read about them, that they probably were.

Yes ...
But many of the people who they were trying to persuade against it didnt know that .. and they might've back then anyway, as they probably weren't bred specifically to have low levels of THC like now.

America and it's anglophone allies bullied the UN into making all it's members sign the despicable Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs (1961), the Convention on Psychotropic Substances (1971) and the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (1988).

As a result you have the current communist-nazi-jewish international laws whereby drugs are banned just about everywhere, regardless of democracy or common sense.

Also, IIRC, someone on the task force was someone else's son/nephew, possibly DuPont's.

it is illegal in the united states to cultivate industrial hemp. Most of the hemp in the products you find in the states has been imported from other countries; in fact the US is the only industrialized nation that has a ban on industrial hemp. Hemp can be used to make rope, fabric, paper (less deforestation), plastics, beauty products (the seeds have a fuck load of essential fatty acids).

so why is it still illegal? i think the main reason is ignorance, stupid politicians and the stupid people that vote for them, but im sure dupont and the corn lobbyists do have some influence.

but why listen to me, after all i am one of those weirdos who believes cannabis to be a miracle plant, seriously, it's to the point where i believe cannabis is the messiah, but thats for another time.

Hemp is the same plant as marijuana, thus making marijuana automatically makes hemp illegal. Thus the logical way to get hemp banned was to ban marijuana. DuPont thus financed the legal battle to ban marijuana for its own selfish purposes. There is NO reason whatsoever to why hemp should be banned, so why was it? The only logical conclusion to that question is the conspiracy raised in this thread.

If you define different plants by its species, then its the same plant. Cannabis sativa is used for hemp. Its simply different strains that are used industrially. Thus banning cannabis also bans industrial hemp. Strains such as organic kush are grown for max THC content, and other ones are grown for stronger fibers and such, while minimalizing THC content.

A plant only a certain amount of energy. However, they can have both to an extent. If you breed an industrial hemp plant with organic cush for example, you'd get a plant thats inbetween. However, for best production of either fiber or THC, the plant needs to use its energy on either, thus making a strain thats good for fiber will take out energy from THC prodcution, while making a plant thats got lots of THC will take energy from the fiber strength. Kinda like if the plant is pollinated, it'll use more energy to make the seeds, instead of making more resin in a last minute attempt to catch more pollen. If it catches no pollen, it'll devote all its energy to it, and the product it makes in attempt to catch the pollen, contains lots of THC.

All aspects (cultivation, possession, dealing) are illegal in Jamaica, but it's overlooked because it's so widespread. And it's not legal in the Netherlands, it's decriminalized. You can still get in trouble for smoking in public.

Actually, cultivation is legal. As long as it's for your own use (5 plants is max for one person).

But using hemp to make rope and shit with is completely legal. They use the kind that doesn't have any THC. It's probably legal to grow that kind of hemp in most countries.

Cannabis sativa is not cannabis indica, is not cannabis ruderalis. Ruderalis is hemp btw.

At the time when hemp was made illegal, the five largest corporations pretty much ran the country.

Remember, at this time, America wasn't a huge world power like we are now, not a huge economic force. So the government relied HEAVILY on these large corporations to keep the economy going. So, the Rockefellars and the Duponts pretty much ran the fucking country.

And, sadly, it's still that way. They just talk about it less. Why do you think the government just lended 80 billion to AIG? Because if AIG went under, we're well on our way to an economic depression.

The other reason they made hemp illegal is because they fucking hated mexicans back then even more than we do now.

The thing is marijuana is only one type of hemp plant. You can get hemp products in health food stores n shit. So when people say, oh the constitution was written on hemp, oh cars were meant to run on hemp, it doesnt necesarily mean marijuana based hemp. Plus, if Hemp really was that great and could be used for 'many' things, I doubt some oils to make rubber would be something to spend millions on to outlaw, when there is a shitload of money to be made somewhere else.

All these conspiracys sound good, and sound true, but the main reason it was outlawed was because of those christian crazy anti everything people, which made up america up to the 60's.

lolwut?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp

In some states (like Hawaii, check NORML) hemp is legal to grow and/or import and sell if you have a license.

Hemp (from Old English hænep, see cannabis (etymology)) is the common name for plants of the entire genus Cannabis, although the term is often used to refer only to Cannabis strains cultivated for industrial (non-drug) use.Typically, Hemp contains below 0.3% THC, while Cannabis grown for marijuana can contain anywhere from 6 or 7 % to 20% or even more.

Industrial hemp being banned at the same time must make the conspiracy true. If it weren't true, only the actual drug would be made illegal.

Besides, you can produce triple the amount of paper on an acre of hemp then on an acer of trees, and it can be grown in different places and the first batch arrives many years early.

Hemp i believe is the male of the plant? am i correct?

It contains only 0.3% THC Wich would take processing of about 100 plants, To get some THC that could be used.

I think that in theory it would be possible to Use Alcohole extraction, on Industrial Hemp to create Hash, before they are sent to be processed. Maybe they caught people soaking the leaves in huge vats of isopropyl alcohol?

Thats not exactly it. Only females can be used in marijuana production since the THC lies in the buds (the female sex organ). Since the fibers are used in rope production, I believe both sexes can be used for that.

Yet I keep hearing that their government is in the midst of rethinking their weed law enforcement. I have heard that that is partly because of tourists, but also their own people. Though I think their stats show that the majority of their population doesn't use the THC.

Yet I keep hearing that their government is in the midst of rethinking their weed law enforcement. I have heard that that is partly because of tourists, but also their own people. Though I think their stats show that the majority of their population doesn't use the THC.

Though? Perhaps it is just a minority of their politicians who think this way. IDK.

The use of drugs in the Netherlands is a lower than other european countries and the USA.

Rethinking the drug policies happens under pressure of the EU and ofcourse our very own retarded christian political parties.

But I think you're referring to shrooms, they are in the process of outlawing them after a few tourists committed suicide in Amsterdam. Another reason why drug tourists should fuck off and not visit my country, bunch of faggots.

it is illegal in the united states to cultivate industrial hemp. Most of the hemp in the products you find in the states has been imported from other countries; in fact the US is the only industrialized nation that has a ban on industrial hemp.

No it's a completely seperate strain of cannabis, Sativa, Indica, and Hemp, the later contains a very small amount of THC and has tradationally been used for hemp ropes.

Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa is the variety grown for industrial use in Europe, Canada, and elsewhere, while C. sativa subsp. indica generally has poor fiber quality and is primarily used for production of recreational and medicinal drugs.

Come to B.C. Canada we are way more accepting.

Four people are having a pot party up the road right now, my neighbor is smoking pot and behind my house there is two old people smoking a joint. It reeks of pot.

We still have to watch out for bacon.

You guys shouldn't look at the issue exclusively from an America-centric point of view, there are other countries too you know, prohibition is actually older than that.

The Ottomans had tried to restrict hashish use as back as 1378 AD, and since then there have been many efforts by governments and religious authorities to eradicate its use throughout the world.

In 1798 for example after a report came out that stated that much of the Egyptian underclass was abusing hashish and that this fact was having a negative impact on productivity, Napoleon totally banned the use of hashish in the then French colony of Egypt, he also wanted to prevent his soldiers from bringing the habit back to the mainland, however hash became trendy in Paris in the following years.

In 1890 Turkey also makes hash illegal and so does Greece, I used to have a book about the history of prohibition I don't know where it is though.

alright, so technically it is legal to cultivate industrial hemp but the red tape you'd have to go through in order to cultivate it, plus the cost of building a 10 foot fence makes it somewhat not worth it. i read on article some years back about a guy that tried to grow hemp and the gov't straight up tried to fuck him over by claiming they never received the proper forms even though the grower had made copies and had receipts of him sending them and the gov't receiving them.

oh and sambob, weed isn't legal in amsterdam, it's just decriminalized.

So if you smoke weed on the street in amsterdam, a cop can come by and fine you? But the thing that makes it different is of course the selling....it must be legal to sell weed for authorized cafes in amsterdam, no? Else they'd be given huge fines. Even in USA states and other countries were its decriminalized, selling weed isn't which still makes it a black market item.

I always thought it was made illegal because of the cotton industry, not DuPont. It was made illegal what, about the mid 1930's or so. There was still a lot of money being made share cropping, and the cotton industry had lobbyists, get the gov to make it illegal because it was not as climate restricted, so there was more land, which would lead to greater supply and lower prices, the former slaves could move to friendly states, and be compensated better, and they would loose their workers, and the clothes made from hemp last quite a bit longer than the clothes made from cotton.

heres a conspiracy for you

since the tobacco industry can't advertise anymore, they keep weed illegal, making it more attractive and its use more prevalent to todays youth, who get into the psychological habit of smoking something, eventually there will be a time where they cant smoke weed, (job, area is dry, probation), then they will do the thing closest to smoking weed smoking cigarettes, then they will get addicted.

This is probably happening, but definitely not by active lobbying from the tobacco companies. It's just been illegal for so long now that everyone's stuck on thinking it's evil, and now it won't be legalized [quickly].

Kids probably do this though, I have friends that have gone from pot to cigs. Fucking idiots, giving regular rippers a bad name.

There are no legitimate reasons for the prohibition of cannabis.

Its prohibition is making the world worse off then if it were legal.

Cannabis should be legal.

According to The Emperor Wears No Clothes it is, but that book is not a credible source at all. It's a nice conspiracy theory, but has no valid evidence. Its history is seriously biased and the sources are suspect. There are all sorts of reasons why hemp should not be illegal, but let's get away from the conspiracies and use real evidence.

There are some very good histories of drugs in North America and the western world in general, but The Emperor Wears No Clothes is not one of them. Check out many of the resources at http://historyofalcoholanddrugs.typepad.com, which is the website of the Alcohol and Drugs History Society, a fairly credible source for well documented research.

Fixed. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6T1B-4NP9KFG-2&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=d09991c6ab0e70b71cca1f20b90219c8

Snus use was independently associated with increased risk of pancreatic cancer (relative risk for ever-users of snus 2·0; 95% CI 1·2–3·3, compared with never-users of any tobacco), but was unrelated to incidence of oral (0·8, 95% CI 0·4–1·7) and lung cancer (0·8, 0·5–1·3).
[...]
We were unable to confirm any excess of oral or lung cancer in snus users.

Interesting, I would have guessed that it would cause oral cancer.

Interesting, I would have guessed that it would cause oral cancer.

And even pancreatic cancer chances are low. They still don't have enough evidence to put on the packages that "snus causes cancer" such as they have on cigarette packs.

Probably because it hasn't existed long enough to conduct long-term studies.

There have been many long term studies. Besides, you quoted "oral tobacco" "yet to be proven to cause cancer", which is wrong. American oral tobacco has been, but not the Swedish (snus). Reason they site is that snus contains almost no nitrosamines.

...snus contains almost no nitrosamines.

You can help reduce the cancer-causing effects of nitrosamines by consuming protective antioxidants before hand such as vitamin C and vitamin E, but no vitamin offers 100% protection. The only safe strategy is to avoid them completely.

That being said, snus appears to be infinitely safer than conventional tobacco.

To quote Kenneth Warner, director of the University of Michigan Tobacco Research Network:

"The Swedish government has studied this stuff to death, and to date, there is no compelling evidence that it has any adverse health consequences. ... Whatever they eventually find out, it is dramatically less dangerous than smoking."

It has been posted many times that hemp farming is legal in a few states, and is not criminalized at a federal level.
