Default Anti-Virus software

I've got myself a good level of internet security. Firefox 3, PeerGuardian, and a knowledge on how to browse the internet, so I don't really care too much for spyware and internet blocking capabilities. In fact, I don't need them at all.

What I do need is something to find and destroy viruses, malware, rootkits, etc which I might pick up from seedy torrents and the like. It doesn't have to be free (hence the seedy torrents) but I would prefer something freeware, so I can save myself some pain.

I'd prefer something that doesn't run constantly, or uses very little resources. I'll mostly use it after I download something to scan the folder, I don't have a need for it to be running 24/7 or do daily scans. In fact, I'd hate something like Norton that hogs all my resources and installs 12 taskbars in firefox. I don't want Norton 360, thanks.

Something reliable please, that you recommend or use yourself. Thanks.

How about something that scores higher than 44% on self-protection?

off the top of my head.

AVG
Spybot S&D

The way you answered to Thunder came across as rude, never a good idea to sound like that when asking for help.

I'm running most of my VMs in shared mode, and even if the virus is trapped in the VM, it could be weeks before I notice, and then I'm really fucked.

Well if you searched the forum, you'd notice that most people on here recommend Nod32, so it was pointless asking our opinions again, wasn't it.

God damn. There's a new antivirus thread about every 3 days!

This is at least the 3rd time I've mentioned this: Avast! Antivirus. Works amazingly. It's freeware, and pwns the shit out of any software you have to pay for. It doesn't really seem to hog resources. At least not compared to Norton and McAshit. I use it, and it seems like it should be great for your use.
