Default iPhone fell in lake... can I replace?

My friend dropped his iPhone in the lake a week ago while boating. It rarely turns on and when it does it doesn't work right. He purchased a new one and I'm still in procession of the water logged one. Now, if you look in the headphone jack the litmus paper is half white and half red. If I bleach the litmus paper white (with a q tip or something) can I bring it to my local genius and get a refurbished one? I don't have a box or paper work just the phone.

Or you could have just let it dry out before trying to turn it on.

Well I took it apart and let it sit but this fucking thing was in the water for about an hour so I don't expect it to be very usable.

Pretty sure "falling into lake" isn't covered by warranty.

It's not litmus paper. Its just paper that reacts and turns red in the presence of water. The indicator is really sensitive and has even tripped in humid weather. I've seen threads online where people just paint it white with acrylic paint and a small brush. Apparently that worked and the guy got a new iphone.

Warranty will not cover it.

However, I've had similar experiences with expensive phones, and insurance is the best way to go. I dropped my $800 phone into my pool, got it out. Completely fucked. Nokia didn't want to know about it. I called up my insurance broker, and they gave me a new one for $55.

Not a bad deal.
