| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

do you figure there is an unmentioned populous of voters who registered as republicans in order to vote for Ron Paul in the primary, thus predicted to vote republican and for thus for McCain who are in fact now going to vote for Obama.

Re: obama/paul voter base
I don't get it. Why would anyone who registered to vote for Ron Paul vote for Obama? Their positions are diametrically opposed.

Economically they are, but there are plenty of isolationists and non-interventionists in the Paul camp that were there only for the foreign policy and/or social liberalism aspect of his candidacy. There will undoubtedly be Paulites switching to Obama, the only question is how many.

Venn diagram.
I like almost all of Paul's ideals, and like a good bit of Obama's. I never liked Obama's stance on gun control and a few other things that don't immediately spring to mind, and I definitely dislike Obama for changing his stance on the FISA bill. I would love to see Paul in the Oval Office, but I will lose little sleep if Obama happens to get there. God help us if McCain gets the victory.

There were a lot of non-interventionists in the Paul camp, but despite what the old media wants us to believe, I don't think there were any isolationists.

Where were they then? Who was the most isolationist candidate in that pool?

Re: obama/paul voter base
I'm not sure who was the most isolationist, but Paul was definitely the least isolationist.

On a continuum of foreign policy it goes like this:
Neocons--->Leftist interventionists--->"Moderates"--->Non-interventionists--->Isolationists
I know Paul was a non-interventionist, but he was one step away from isolationism; everybody else wanted some kind of intervention.

Re: obama/paul voter base
Non-interventionism = not meddling in other countries' affairs.
Isolationism = non-interventionism + economic protectionism.
Ron Paul is against meddling in other countries' affairs, but he was the least protectionist of all candidates. So he's really not even close to being an isolationist. But the old media purposely confused non-interventionism with isolationism in order to use that negative connotation against him.
