Re: Alcoholism
When you drink alone for the sake of blacking out, I guess? When you need a drink to get through the day?
EDIT: Hmm...

Re: Alcoholism
Do you get sick and go into convulsions and seizures if you do not consume alcohol? If so you are an alcoholic.
If you drink everyday, all day, you are an alcoholic.
If every one of your thoughts is about being drunk or getting alcohol, you're are most likely an alcoholic.

Re: Alcoholism
I realized I was an alcoholic when I started shaking in the morning, twitching when I can smell someone's beer, blacking out at least 4 times a week, drinking 7 nights a week, going to liquor stores 2 or 3 times a day, being recognized by almost every liquor store worker in the city...
I generally go on binges of a week long, then take a few days off when I have to work long hours. My drinking is far from moderate or healthy, but I keep telling myself that taking 2 days off after drinking for ten is good enough.

Re: Alcoholism
People tend to get alcoholics confused with drunks, IMO. Though being a drunk gets you to being an alcoholic eventually.

Re: Alcoholism
If it's hard to have fun without drinking.
If you're first thoughts when invited to a party/function are "Can we drink there? Is there going to be booze there? How can I go about getting booze? Should we pregame?"
If when you're not drinking, you're thinking about drinking.
If you black out fairly often.
If your drinking has gotten you into repeated trouble, or made you do things you regret, and you continue to drink in the same manner.
If you constantly make excuses for why you get so drunk. "lulz it's friday!" "my team won!" "my team lost!" "my girlfriends being a bitch!" "my dog died!"
All good signs.

Re: Alcoholism
You're an alcoholic when you admit that you're powerless over alcohol and that it has made your life unmanageable. No one else can determine if you're an alcoholic...that's something that only you can decide for yourself.

Re: Alcoholism
When you feel the need to rationalize your consumption by comparing your intake to others with the "at least I'm not THAT guy" notion, it's probably not a very good sign.

I used to do this, not because i need a drink to get through the day or to get away from reality, but just to get to fucking sleep without the 1-2 hour waiting period.

Re: Alcoholism
When it starts to affect your life negatively and you still can't stop. It's usually fun. Then fun with trouble. Then just trouble.
However most people just call anyone an alcoholic who they don't like and drinks more then they do.

Re: Alcoholism
Whenever your drinking effects your life negatively it can be considered a problem. There is a difference between a functional alcoholic and a lush though.

That would make most of the population alcoholics; the rest being drug-users.

Re: Alcoholism
Well doctors use the DSM-4 manual to diagnose drug addiction. If you resemble like 3 or more symptoms from a certain list your considered dependent on drugs.
Check it: http://www.dawnfarm.org/pdf/DSM_Abuse_and_dependence_criteria.pdf
There two different categories that one could fall under, dependency and abuse. I learned this in skoOl. Funny, a Guy who takes sobo's trying to stay sober going to school for counseling drug abusers.

Re: Alcoholism
your an alcoholic when you drink throughout the whole day just to get through your day. Your life revolves around alcohol. You wake up in the morning and Down a pint of vodka. Thats when you know you have it bad.
Your not an alcoholic if you drink three nights a week and the people around you can't handle their alcohol at an appropriate level. Also the people are probably just trying to give you a hard time I wouldn't take it to heart.

Depends how realistic the possibility of getting caught is, how much it affects your performance, and whether or not you really have an honest choice in it; as in, you either drink, or you can't work/possibly have DTs.
I used to take a 24 oz bottle of Pepsi and Bacardi 151 mixed in a 2:1 ratio (8 oz 151, 16 of Pepsi) to work at Panera Bread...but it was either that or having the bread knife magically move from my hand to my co-worker's throat.

It definitely seems borderline alcoholic behavior. Thankfully where I work both the owner and the manager drink heavily in the office all day, so it's not a problem if any of us feel like drinking a beer while waiting on customers or smoking a joint out back. Cus hey, it's the Keys, everyone drinks all the time. I'm not saying this is very professional behavior but it's accepted in our store.

Re: Alcoholism
in my oppinion being an alcoholic is the point at which alcohol makes you a complete failure and yet you dont stop drinking. this varies from person to person
I can wake up in the morning with a newcastle and then drink 3 more of them before lunch. Then I switch over to a lighter beer and drink it like water for the rest of the day and still be able to hold intelligent conversationso according to my sytem I can drink a 12 pack everyday and not be an alcoholic.
and just so you know, i dont get the shakes or anything and I have drank like this for years.
if I drink liquour it is a different story
if my brother drinks 3 beers he cant function. if he drank 3 beers everyday he would be an alcoholic.
some people are drinkers some arent. in germany beer is the water
