| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Is there a way to make a network invisible?
Due to certain restrictions, I dont believe I am allowed to have a wireless network in my building. I do have a wireless router, and i can password protect it, but im afraid that by some means someone could pinpoint it to my exact apartment. So...
Is there a way to set up my network, and it be completely invisible? Ie, when someone on their wireless laptop 2 apartments down from me gets on, his or her computer wont even see the network?
My basic fear is somebody (like my landlord) war-walking and finding my setup with his iphone or something

Re: Is there a way to make a network invisible?
Completely invisible, i don't think so.
To 99% of people, yes, turn off essid broadcasting in the router web configuration interface.
If the wireless is already configured, the wireless network will still be visible on your laptop and whoever *saw* the wireless connection.
1. Turn off essid broadcasting
2. Change essid
3. Use the configuration wizard to configure the connection manually.

Get a router supported by OpenWRT and set the frequency out of a range supported by most cards. Then set your own card to be able to use that frequency.

and youre positive this will make it so, lets say joe cocksucker across the hall turns on his laptop, (99% sure everyone is running windows btw) and his network card doesnt pick up a damned thing? It wont say "wireless networks available" or anything?
also (dumb question) will i still be able to save the network and connect automatically?

the way he posted it isn't fool proof. there are programs out there that can pickup your wireless signal. But unless they nerd and go looking for trouble to cause they wont find you. But joe cocksucker across the hall wont just boot his laptop up and find your network. If you want to go all out then do what posted above by Prometheum. That almost a 99.9% sure they wont pick it up

good idea, but i'd like to try and do this without buying any new hardware atm. The router is a belkin 54g, so i dont think its openwrt supported, at least google says it isnt.
and even then, my card is a bcm43xx, and my wife is running a mac, so that has clusterfuck written all over it in my eyes.
then again, i am a networking n00b

You will be able to save the network.
Also set up WPA and a MAC filter. Just for extra safety.

Re: Is there a way to make a network invisible?
Change the ESSID to landlord or something that DOES NOT point to you, as well as disabling ESSID broadcast.

That is _total_ clusterfuck. Typically I would just go with the "disable essid broadcast", the only problem is that they can still pick up the packets. I don't even know if it's really possible to do that. it was just an interesting idea that came to me.
Nobody will be able to turn on their laptop and waltz onto your network if you have MAC filtering, WPA2, and disabled ESSID. But if someone runs airodump or wireshark, they might see your traffic.

Re: Is there a way to make a network invisible?
Dammit I clicked on this thread expecting to find someone trying to make a network across the internet invisble. Fuck.
Here is my answer:
Ok so assuming you just want share files and such go get a php backdoor from www.milw0rm.com then get an apache server and install it. Get the port for it and change it to an obscure number like 9999(port can be changed in the config google it). Then once you have the backdoor installed and apache. Get tor and privoxy(only for windows I think). Then install and run, restart apache. Then google the guide on making "how to make a .onion hidden service" then do that get your Hash.onion. Now repeat on the other computer. Exchange the .onion hashes. When you type them up in your browser (set the settings to socks proxy ip localhost and port 9050 socks5 (get firefox its easier)) you get the other computer encrypted and hidden.
