Question Why does a 61 Gig HD only show 1.99 Gigs

I just picked up a spare hd at a garage sale. The lable says it's a 61 Gig HD, but it only shows 1.99 Gigs when I hook it it up. Plus it has Win98 SE installed on it.

How do I get this thing back to the full 61 gigs? I tried a google search but didn't find what I needed on this.

What OS are you in?

If you're in XP, it's easy, go to Start Menu>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Click Computer Managment.

On the left hand side, look for Disk Managment, click that then your screen will look like

http://www.perimeterless.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/diskmanagmnet.png

This, click the new hard drive, right click-Delete Partition.

After a few seconds, it should show a different color, then right click>New Partition, set it up as NTFS and do a quick format.

Done, usable 60gb.

You had to delete partition, make a new one and then format.

Thanks for the 411 kirvt. I'd actually already figured it out earlier, but I had to drive my roommate to the airport and couldn't get back on till now.

The FAT16 file system can only support max volume size of 2GB. Win98 runs on FAT32.

For a start, format the drive and see whether or not you have more space.
