swim wants to be a hitman
Swim wants to be a hitman, and also maybe blackmail people. Swim has attempted to kill someone once, but it wasn't planned, and he wasn't successful. So what he planned to do is murder some random negro for practice, and just to be able to tell himself that he had done it.
Swim would join the army, but it is against his beliefs. But after he gets his practice, how could he go about getting work? He figures nobody takes anybody with ads in Soldier of Fortune very seriously, other than police.
