Default ASUS Eee PC and other mini notebooks

With all of these mini notebooks out, I've really been interested in getting one for school and stuff.

You know, I go to a community college, and I wouldn't want to be one of the assholes who brings in their giant laptops and waits an hour for it to boot it up just to peck at the laptop and type 3 sentences.

As good as they sound, I know I could get a normal sized laptop like twice as good as it and bigger screen and stuff for the same amount of money. I'm torn here.

Okay I'll cut the the point. There is basically like no way to test drive these fuckers are there? Obviously no retailers sell them, and I sure as hell don't know anybody with one. And do any of you guys have any experience with these things? I'd just like to see if I might as well get a 13" or 14" regular laptop with more power to do shit or go with the ultra portable.

Oh, I was about to post a thread on these but I think I'll ride on this one.

Which do you guys think is superior out of the Asus Eee 901 or the MSI Wind whatever it is.

The wind is bigger and thus a friendlier keyboard but I hear it has a shitty shit trackpad.

I've got a few people vouching for the Eee but they've not used the other.

Thoughts?

Go to a sony store or any other place and try any laptop the size of an EEE. If you like the size and form factor, go with it. Personally I would consider one but ultimately am unlikely to buy one unless I end up with a lot of disposable income.

I was at CompUSA the other day and they had the eeepc on display, its a pretty solid laptop, the keyboard is small but you would probably get used to it over time. I am a member at BJs and they had the base model for $300 with an instant $50 rebate also

The microscopic keyboard and squinty display take some getting used to.

Sadly nobody in my town has a laptop that small. The closest I've seen is a 12 inch, and I'm sure thats pretty big when compared to the 10" screen of the 1000h

If I remember correctly from reviews the Eee pc was alot better than the Wind.

The Asus Aspire One just came out and its been getting pretty decent reviews.

My friend recently bought Asus Eee pc and he brought it around my house. When i first heard of them i was kinda skeptical about how they would look and preform. But i have to say they're pretty nice. It's very small and flexible and extremely lightweight.

I believe you can get different versions that run different operating systems, i think the default standard version comes with linux Xandros. But you can get a them with windows xp, if they're not available ..you can always put windows on there anyway, if that's your sort of thing.

It has a solid state design making it extremely shock proof, it basically can take a lot of wear and tear.It has a built-in camera, but the camera is not all that, it reminded me of a standard web camera. It support SDHC cards so you can add additional memory.(which is always a good thing)

It has a built-in wireless adapter making it easy to connect to open free wifi spots, when you're out an about. That's one of the reasons why my friend bought it, so he can learn more about wireless technology and crack wep/wpa encryption.

From my observation the start up/shutdown speed was pretty quick.. it really was a matter of seconds (keeping in mind he was running linux)

Overall i would say it was very flexible for college and very accessible for taking down class notes and just generally convenient. However i would recommend you buy the Linux version and learn about Linux and stick with it. Rather than putting tinyxp on there or something. (for performance wise reasons)

I like it that much i was thinking about buying one next week, which i probably will.

Hmmm, the Eees do look delicious.

Would I get a 901A or the 1000 though?

Solid state memory vs a standard HDD. Thoughts?

Smile Re: ASUS Eee PC and other mini notebooks

i've been following the like of eee's for a while now, and plan to get the 901 soon.

i've seen the 900 in stores (microcenter, some best buys...) which is the same size as the 901. the small screen and small keyboard would take some getting used to (especially since i currently use a 24").

one thing i find to be a great plus about the line of eee's is the amount of mods for them. i have seen everything from making them touchscreen to adding gps.

even though i have a standard, full size laptop, i was looking for one to get to take to class to take noted on, like you said, so i didn't have to wait for things to load and shit.

although i don't know someone who has one, or have used one for very long outside of the store, i think it's great.

the SSD over the HDD is a great option, in my mind, because since it's small, i think people would toss it around or move it around much more than someone would with a full size keyboard. because of the fewer moving parts, i think it'll take the movement better than something wtih a spinning disk.
