Default Giving Ubuntu one last shot

Well, for a long time I was a happy Feisty Fawn user, had my Xubuntu desktop looking good and functioning great...til I broke something trying to install a package from the gutsy repos...so I installed Gutsy and was less than impressed with it. Keybindings in XFCE, Fluxbox and GNOME fail to work (yet they work with other Linux OS's on this machine), apps freeze frequently (despite the fact my cpu and ram is generally undertaxed), fonts don't display properely, etc etc. Just annoying shit.

So I am now 'upgrading' (and I hope this time it's an upgrade) to hardy heron. Should this also suck dick, I shall endeavour find something more reliable for an HD install.

I think a lot has changed since the days of fawn. I have hardy installed and have to say i've only had minor issues like setting the sensitivity on the mouse pad and configuring the resolution. But other than that it works flawlessly. I have gnome, kde, fluxbox and enlightenment installed and they all work fine without no problems. I haven't had any issues with any apps freezing and would say if that has happened, then it is a very rare occurrence.

Today also i plugged in my kodak camera and ubuntu detected it and imported all the pictures. I was like woah..just never expected that i guess.

Also the boot iso's also have a lot more configuration options and also present menu settings to configure the boot sequence rather than actually applying the parameters yourself.

Pretty much everything worked out of the box.

well, sys upgrade broke my system:P /dev/ something a rather is mising, and it won't booth, just drops me into a shell (ash)

Maybe I'll try debian. I do like the package managment of ubuntu but it doesn't seem particularly stable, so it seems like the logical choice.

Right, well I managed to boot using a previous kernel, but now I am stuck with 800x600 graphics. Used the GUI driver upgrade thing, enabled card...and I am still stuck with this resolution.

Changed xorg.conf to nvidai, then nv, then xorg, then vesa...same thing.

I don't understand how when I run puppy linux, or slitaz, or dsl, or slackware, or gentoo, free bsd xorg and vesa can put me straight into 1028x768, yet "noob friendly" ubuntu makes this difficult.

Yea that's the same problem i had, and i know a few others who have had the same issue. I don't know why it does that. I was stuck on 800x600 and any other options were just not visible.

For some reason it just doesn't detect the display. However, what you have to do is to add additional options to xorg.conf..

Here a tutorial that i found that solves the problem. It says to copy their entire xorg.conf and replace it with your original. It will work, But don't do that because you'll only put other options out, that you might need.

Just back up your xorg.conf file and within this tutoral just copy the "section monitor" and "section screen" and apply them to your xorg.conf. It works as normal then.

Someone should probably file a report on it, so when the next release comes around, we wouldn't have to keep doing this.

Yeah, I copied my xorg.conf from an old feisty install. It had my monitor vertical and horizontal refresh rates and all that. I just don't fucking get why every other distro (except the other noob friendly giant, Fedora) can do this automagically.

Keybindings still don't work though.

Hardy Herons the best linux distro I've come across so far. I've tried OpenSUSE 11 which is supposed to be one of the best but its a load of crap compared to Ubuntu 8 IMO. YaST is shit compared to the Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu.

You can find all sorts of good shit on scribd. I found The Ubuntu Bible on there. I only started reading it it goes into mad detail.
