Girlies And Dawgs
I know, I know already, about the only time I come here is to bang on about this subject but it needs repeating often.
Was walking into town this morning and the girly infront of us (chav-trampstamp-jogging trouser and t shirt that had shrunk in the wash) was walking a dog.
Now I happen to know this dog (not in a biblical sense I hasten to add), he's a full grown RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK.
Full grown for them means about 40kgs of lion hunting power.
And he is also a really sweet natured dog.
The girly had him on a chain about 1ft in length and a full harness.
The dog saw another dog across the road and wanted to go sniff. So he went.
Missy tried to stop him and even with her full body weight behind it she couldn't. She found herself in the middle of a busy road.
Now remember that the ridgeback was in a good mood, and was only wanting to be socialable.
What if the other dog had been a bitch in heat? (Would have been quite funny as the other dog was some kinda rat on steriods terrier misfit)
Or what if, for whatever reason, the ridgeback had decided the terrier just needed killing?
Or the ridgeback went for a child?
There is no way, no how a girl or even most full grown men can hold a dog that size if it decides it wants to kill or mate.
I wish dog owners would finally wise the fuck up.
Girl, unless you're a member of the Russian Female Olympic Shot Put Team do NOT buy a big dog.

Re: Girlies And Dawgs
Most likely some stabbing would have ensued between the dog's because one of their dogs was attacked. Thats why the only pet I have is a mudkipz

I've always wondered why they call it common sense.

But the puppies are so cute http://cdn-www.dailypuppy.com/media/dogs/anonymous/ruby_rhodesian_ridgeback_01.jpg_w450.jpg
Though, it bugs me just as much even when they can hold their dogs back. You should be able to control your dog better than just holding it back as best you can. I was fully capable of walking my moms friends pitbull when I was 12.

Re: Girlies And Dawgs
I'm sad to say that my dog gets the better of me sometimes. Usually when I've loosened my death grip on her lead for awhile then she spots another dog... Quite often I end up getting dragged a few feet until I regain my balance, then I can hold her back again. Fortunately she only ever wants to play, and I live in a really small country town so the people are forgiving and no-one has mean dogs.

That's pathetic. Dogs aren't children, they need hardcore discipline.

Same. Common sense isn't so fucking common.
Like that one guy in Washington state I think it was who got fucked to death by a horse, how stupid do you really have to be?

Re: Girlies And Dawgs
It seems that every woman in my area has a pair of ridgebacks, generally disciplined by a faux firm "no" and a hug... A couple of weeks ago two of them got into a fight. Picture a two late 20s yuppie women hitting a pair of fighting ridgebacks with their handbags. The dogs resolved the issue themselves, thankfully without too much damage. Honestly, I think the 'intervention' by the owners just buoyed each dog's spirits and kept the fight going longer.
EDIT: This happened at a dog off leash area near my house.

Re: Girlies And Dawgs
having a ridgeback on a harness isn't a great idea. you are attached to the dog at the most powerful part of it's body.
the misconception that its easier to restrain by holding it around the chest...
Normal collar works alot better.
