Default Mushroom myth

I have heard this statement numerous times from many people regarding psilocybin mushrooms. They say the reason that you trip is because there is poison in the mushrooms and that makes you trip. I have tried to argue that its not true but they are convinced that the toxins in there make your brain think its being poisoned and thats what causes the trip.

So to anyone with actual knowledge about mushrooms, not just dumb kidiot 14 year olds, is there ANY truth to that statement? I'm thinking its complete bullshit. I read about every article on shroomery.org about how mushrooms work and just about everything there and it does not say that. Since thats probably the best online resource about mushrooms I'm thinking if it were true that it would say that on the website.

Also there is this article about how shrooms work:
http://www.shroomery.org/8754/How-do-shrooms-work

It just talks about receptors in the brain and not some "poison" which somehow makes you trip. So am I right? There is no poison, is there?

Not as far as I know, no. I'm certainly no expert, by any means, but I'm 99.9% sure they don't.

Lets just say never disagree with someone on a meth binge..You can turn your back on a friend, but never turn your back on a drug. Especially when it's holding a razor sharp hunting knife.

But yeah, OP, you are quite correct in stating that psilocybin is not a poison.

Maybe you should think about researching other drugs and their myths as well, you seem to do well at it on your own, and after some devotion and research, you will be able to clear up shit tons of myths.

Pretty much any time the subject of drugs comes up with a new person I meet, or the like, I hear at least one myth, if not several.

Always. It never ever fails.

And by clearing up drug myths and teaching people, you are making their drug usage safer, as well as other peoples, because once you pass on a great tidbit of info, it spreads like wildfire, depending on what it is.

So by simply doing some research, and being able to calmly and patiently explain and re explain and break down any idea enough so that anyone can understand it, you can actually make the world a better place, man.

I know I appear to be a dick on here, but in real life, when it comes to clearing up drug myths, I try to be patient as hell with people, and I am always looking for a new angle to explain things from. Making a subject or idea or concept easier for a person to understand is key, and can be done by making comparisons between the subject at hand, and something that the person excels at.

Receptors for instance can be explained in a limitless number of ways, depending on the person, their basic understanding of things, and just finding something that is familiar to them that you can identify the concept with.

I hope that makes sense, I am fucking tired.

The book came first, the movie is one of the most horrible book to movie adaptations in history. The movie was ok, funny shit, but nothing like the book at all, which was epic.

there are things in mushrooms that are bad for you (sometimes, it depends)

but the minor toxins in there aren't what make you high.

simple, psilocybe is a P-active in the brain, just like alot of other substances, i.e downers/uppers(stimulants). ask them fucks does getting hyper off a energy drink result from being poisoned from ingredients in the drink? No its because your brain adapts and changes because of the shit flowing through your bloodstream into the brain which then manipulates chemicals/receptors and what not inside your noggin.

I heard this myth over and over(from my best friend even) pisses me off.

I can understand what the idiots are getting at though. While it is the psilocybin that causes the trip (not some sort of food poisoning), there a literally hundreds of different mushrooms that can contain this chemical. Some can make you rather ill. I myself have had a few trips where as soon as the trip started I was overwhelmed with vomiting and explosive diarrhea. Then there are the times (most of the time) where I take them, and have a delightful, hilarious, mind-opening time. Then there are a few occasions that were down right fucked up, like my most recent moment with them where I just sat in my room banging my head against the wall from time to time while manically sitting in my room rocking wanting it to stop (even though I wanted to take them in the first place, this was due to the fact that I had someone over at my house that I hardly knew). For some reason I prefer LSD to mushrooms, due to the fact that with mushrooms it seems like a toss-up on the time I am going to have, where as LSD I always tend to have a peaceful, epic time.

I love the book and read it long before I saw the movie... but what the fuck are you talking about? Terry Gilliam's movie is one of the most faithful novel adaptations ever. Scene for scene, it's almost directly taken from the book. There are only a few parts omitted... hell even Hunter S Thompson enjoyed and approved of the movie.

The fact they seem to believe that a poison can't make you're brain think it's being poisoned is reason enough to tell them to fuck off.

It's a "NO, FUCKING DURR!!!!" situation, except psilocybin isn't a classical poison, in that it doesn't make you dead.. just potentially debilitatingly crazy.

Same here, I enjoyed both and sought out the movie after reading the book - I think it was better that way. I need to reread it too.

Psilocybin, THC, Opium, Cocaine, all are a natural form of plant defense against being eaten, therefore all are poisons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison), at least in my understanding of the term. The fact that humans seek out such substances to consume, sometimes to the point of self-destruction, further leads me to believe that they are all poisonous to humans.

They aren't there to encourage hippies. They're there to kill hungry animals. That makes them poisons in my book.

On the topic, I ate a delicious non-psychedelic wild mushroom the other day.

Terry Gilliam! As soon as I read that name I thought "Isn't that one of the Monty Python/guy who created the movie Brazil?" I looked it up, and sure enough! Holy shit I did not know he wrote the screenplay for Fear and Loathing, and yes Hunter himself did enjoy the adaptation.

Someone needs to make a film on Hunter's suicide note "Football Season is Over." I'm sure it will someday. Maybe way later when Johnny Depp is old and could play Hunter again.

thc a plant defense? is that why we have cannabinoid recepters in our brain? and cocaine isn't that natural, it's just a processed as american cheese, plus chewing the leaves is a well known treatment for altitude sickness.

As is the case with nicotine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine) and caffeine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine), the role of THC in Cannabis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis), it seems, is to protect the plant from herbivores (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbivore).

Anxiety= can result in vomiting, shits, sweatings......You ever get so nervous, you get gas pains, feel like u want to throw up, sweating/hot. Thats brought on upon yourself whether or not you realize it. Although most people do vomit while on shrooms(i did) and thats because of nausea and what not...tell me with your vision slipping out that your not going to be a bit nauseous....so thats an exception.

Yes, that's what they said, fire poi is better, but he didn't have his chains. That's how I met the dude, I spin fire staff, and he spins staff and poi, and I taught him how to firebreath, but I never even thought of using those with acid. Of course not firebreathing tripping, fuck that, but watching one.

And yes, it was LSD, erhlich tested ;)

As to the pics, sorta like that, but waaay more color.
