Default Changing Logon Screen From Shell

I was playing around with custom logon screens on Ubuntu and I previewed one that doesn't work now I can't get back into Ubuntu to change it. Is there any way to change your logon screen through the command line? The only way I can get into Ubuntu now it the command line in safe mode.

Meaning a screen in GDM or on a GNOME login?

You can hit control-alt-f<1-6> to access virtual terminals, you know.

Yeah one of those GDM screens I downloaded off gnome-look.org. It eventually let me log in after about 30 minutes.

There is a file that controls this stuff.
To use a command is impractial unless you were to create a script that edits things.
I can't remember the file's name, though.
But I have edited the file manually before.
I know there is a file for this.

All else fails, remove GDM and reinstall it.
Sometimes that's the fastest way to repair crap in GNU/Linux.

The Configuration File - gdm.conf

Maybe late, but now you know. And that's what matters when it comes to using GNU/Linux.

Reinstalling a program will do nothing if the configuration files are unchanged (which they often are). Restoring the program's default configuration is a better attempt.

`echo "id:6:initdefault:" >> /etc/inittab`
Use this if you want to be stuck in a reboot loop.

Use a virtual term as pr0n said.
Actually, you could simply edit /etc/inittab and change the default run level to 3, which is what the default should be anyway...
You will need to reboot for the changes to take effect.
If you feel uncomfortable doing this, simply force removal of gdm ( some crap might depend on it ).
That should take you to xdm, or to run level 3, one or the other.
Actually you can do some pretty cool tricks if you know your way around Xorg/Xnest/xinit/[...] and the inittab.

Sorry, i'm not familiar with the init.d/Sys V way of doing things.

*in before pr0m complains about how insecure gdm really is*

EDIT: I never tried the reboot loop, might not work though

Having X and especially something like GDM or XDM on a server is a really bad move. X and co. has been historically buggy, and programs like XDM and GDM have to run as root by design, so it complicates things. On desktop machines, there isn't anything wrong with it.
