| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference. |

What are the real downsides to NOT using actual, distilled water in extractions and so-forth?

If your water is like mine its full of nasty ass chemicals so it might fuck something up. my water is unfucking drinkable I dont like showering in it. It feels like a gel on my skin.

Re: Dh2o
All sorts of minerals that could fuck up your reactions. Especially municipal water, which has been treated with chlorine and such.

Re: Dh2o
How would a Brita water filter do for distilling it? I'm sure it would be better than nothing, but would it do the trick?

Re: Dh2o
maybe, but you know, you can get like a big bottle of distilled water from virtually any store for about a buck.

Re: Dh2o
No chance. Unless you mathmatically work out the differences between your water and distilled. Impurities will throw equilibrium off, Skew pH equilibrium, possibly denature active substances.

Brita =/= distill
Distill:

I'm also sure would be better than nothing, but I don't know, you'd have to ask someone who has preformed a reaction with Brita filtered water.

Haha, I know. I just always forget to buy that one, simple, important item...just slips my mind for some reason. Then, once I'm at home, I really don't want to go all the way back to the store for something that comes immediately out of my faucet. I'll just have to go stock up.

a brita filter will get most of the junk out, as well as making the water tasty as fuck, BUT it's still unsuitable for chemistry because nasty things like chlorine ions make it through the filter, although brita filters are very good at getting crap out because they contain activated charcoal. a gram of which has the surface area of an entire tennis court i've been told.
there is no substitute for distilled water. even bottled water that says on the lablel "triple distilled" blah blah is unusable because minerals are added for taste.
distilled water is cheap too. you can buy a gallon jug for a couple bucks. it will say DISTILLED. none of that dasani crap.
although fiji water is delicous. but overpriced.
