Default Water on Mars

NASA has discovered that Mars, does in fact have water on its planet, could this mean that life could have lived on he desolate planet? Thoughts, opinions?

Hate to say this but, NO DUH. We've known that there is water on Mars for nearly 8 years now. We also know life at one time did live on Mars, though it was a bacterium that was discovered.

This is old news.

We haven't KNOWN this for 8 years at all, we have suspected, and we've found ice. Now we have actually FOUND liquid water. Which could mean bacteria.

I saw this on the news today and was thrilled. We now have positive confirmation of Earth-like water on Mars. This means all we need to set up a permanent and self-sufficient colony on Mars is a way to get there. With water we can support human and plant life. Plants = oxygen and food, and wind/solar can easily provide power for a small colony. I fucking hope I get to see humans on Mars in my lifetime.

Ok, uh, ice means water, which means we've known water is on Mars. We have found Fossilized bacteria on Mars. Thus we have known this for 8 years. Where there is ice there is also liquid water. Just because some remote robot finally has found said liquid water doesn't mean we didn't know it existed before hand.

As I recall, we have rocks from Mars, and meteorites that could be from Mars, that look like they might be fossilized bacteria, but the scientific community isn't 100% on the issue.

As I recall the bacteria fossilites were finally confirmed as of 2000.

You're refering to this http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/technology/..._bacteria.html

meterorite ALH84001. The bacteria fossilite on it was confirmed to be bacteria. In 2000 when the first mars lander came into contact the material on Mars and the Meterorite were confirmed as identical in their radiometric composition.

Interesting... Do you have a link where it discusses the proof of Martian origin by the radiometric composition? I'm Googling, but I can't seem to find it.

I don't think you'll find it, its an old article. It was posted in one of two Nasa news magazines, though I don't remember which one. (Sorry its 2 am and I'm tired.)

You'd think that it would still be online somewhere... I was looking through old NASA articles from as early at 1995 on their site, so if it exists, it's bound to be somewhere.

If I find it again I'll post it, but I don't know if I will find it again. I don't remember the specifics to the magazine and not all NASA magazines are archived on the NASA site.

I can't find the book at the moment, but if you have a copy of The Fifth Miracle (can't remember the author) I'm pretty sure he speaks of ALH84001, although it might be a different meteorite. And I know for sure that he provides references. So if, by any chance, you have that book you can look it up in that, otherwise you can wait a few days until I find the book and post the reference here.

Umm... You do realize that space is cold, very very very cold, right?
Finding liquid on another planet with no atmosphere is a very amazing discovery.

And don't you have to find something to know it exists?

would water exist in a solid or gas state in the vacuum of space? .00000000000000000000000001 atm, .0000000000000000001K. Tricky, eh?

Look at the phase diagram for water:
http://robbwolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/water-phase-diagram.jpg

Sublimation.

You'll note that martian conditions fit into the sublimation section of that diagram as well. What it does mean is that when men and machines land on Mars, we just dig for ice rather than condensing minute vapor from the atmosphere, or maker forbid, trucking it from the north pole (the south pole is dry ice).

Gotcha. So you're saying that we should dig... because the pressure's higher under ground? Haha I was about to say under earth. as in dirt..... could you call Martian dirt mars? you could unmars something? that's crazy...

You could just pressurize air and water would sublime out though... correct? I wonder how much H2O is in the atmosphere...

ps I like the 'maker forbid' comment... in place of 'god forbid' I assume

Mars has alot of CO2 in the atmosphere correct?

Doesnt that mean we could grow marijuana there, so it absorbs the co2 and makes O2, thus making it liveable?

Plus lots of marijuana to sell for profit :)

Water has not been found on Mars, and neither has bacteria been found on Mars. That is, at present, neither has been found on Mars.

Perhaps in the distant past, by looking at water-rock interactions and possible cannals caused by water flow, there may have been water on Mars.

A meteorite rock with bacteria does not say as much as it would seem. Bacteria are very profuse on Earth, ranging anywhere between the atmosphere to deep within the crust. You could say this meteorite rock which you speak of has been contaminated.

Meteorites burn up as they enter the atmosphere. Any bacterium on it would get fried, and would stick like the fossilized bacteria that they found.

Water cant simply disappear from the surface of a planet....

Certainly it can. Take a look at Mars, there is no water on the surface because it has been converted to a different state, ice, which is present on the Martian surface.
