Absinthe.
I'm not talking about the modern day moonshine with foodcoloring in it, but the 18-1950 stuff.
I can't seem to find any legit information about what it contained except for the thujone/wormwood stuff and a bunch of sketchy websites wanting to sell me ORIGINAL ABSINTHE!!!!!.
Does any of you have articles/ebooks or just happen to know what they threw in it that made it so popular at the time?(And got it banned aswell...)
I'm not going to attempt some backyard-nigger brewing, just curious.

Re: Absinthe.
I watched some documentary that said for some reason (forget why) that it's pretty rare to find pre-ban absinthe recipes. I wouldn't take that info to heart though.

Re: Absinthe.
From what I've read, absinthe was banned because it was preceived to be have used by "anti-establishment" types, rather than its "special" additive, thujone . So basically, it was all pure hype. The only thing that's going to happen when you drink absinthe is that you're going to get drunk.

If you drink true absinthe it's definetly different than a regular drunk.

Re: Absinthe.
I was under the impression that it is illegal to sell already prepared absinthe, but kits were legal because thujone is not a scheduled substance. Yet ive started seeing absinthe in liquor stores around Maryland lately, though it is very pricey.
Though If ever have an excess of money ill definatly buy some, even if thujone isnt very effective or is in concentrations that produce next to no effects I heard absinthe is good tasting, and also is commonly high in alcohol content.

I know that atleast the absinthe available on todays market is nothing but green liquor, I have tried it myself and it is just that, hard liquor.
I am pretty certain that there was other ingredients in it back in the days though.

There are three main herbs in absinthe production grande wormwood, green anise, and florence fennel.

Absinthe is boozy, but not hallucinogenic.

Re: Absinthe.
I drank absinthe this past new years eve. I got really wasted off of one shot, and one champagne glass of it. It usually takes a lot for me to get drunk, and I was lit! It wasn't a sloppy drunk, but more of a speedy kind of drunk. Everything was coordinated fine, but we were fucked up out of recognition!!! Very awesome.

Last year, absinthe was legalized in the United States. They have to be under 10ppm thujone -- exactly the same amount as the EU. So, now everyone can try absinthe and realize that it's pretty much just a further distilled version of sambuca with absolutely no special effects whatsoever. Aside from getting drunk. That's a great effect.

Re: Absinthe.
They do have recipes from pre-ban distilleries. The only difference is that alot of them had "filler" alcohols. Absinthe from the 1800's didn't give you any hallucinations just as todays absinthe doesn't as well.
Since the lift of the ban I have treated myself to a few different brands and it became my favorite spirit from the first drop that hit my tung.
I love the relaxation that comes as a result of the careful preparation of this refined drink. Tenderly balancing the sugar on the spoon, Lovingly pouring the ice cool water over the spoon and marveling at the near mystical transformation known as the loushe. Then upon consumption, the flavorful hints of anise and fennel hit your palate and your are suddenly swimming in the most refreshing alcoholic experience ever conjured...
Yeah, you could say that I like absinthe.
As for hallucinations, do what I do and just go out and buy some mushrooms. You won't find any visions of green faeries in the bottom of an absinthe glass. I do, however, feel much more alert and creative than with other alcoholic beverages. Could be placebo; or perhaps the result of millions of synaptic connections firing away into a euphoric manage et trois between the drink, my tung, and my mind. What ever it may be, I simply love it.
Hmmm... I seem to have lost touch with my point in this. Well, if nothing more, at least take my ramblings as a strong endorsement for this herbal concoction.

Re: Absinthe.
When I was 16 I went on a trip to Spain with my school. We got a huge bottle of absinthe and I decided 4 straight shots would be a good start, I never really drank before that. For the rest of the night I was basically rolling around on the floor giggling and speaking in cryptobabble.
