Making a homemade bong
Okay i've been planning to do this, given that in my country bongs are a little hard to come by and more expensive. I'm also "fairly new" to weed, been smoking for the past months almost every weekend.
I'm going to use a glass bottle (really nice looking one), drill a hole on it, get a metal pipe (been told that copper is best for this) through it, putting a bowl piece on top of it and sealing it with a hot glue gun. I think i also have to make a small hole somewhere else to clear the smoke that's left inside the chamber, right?
Then i'll just probably painting over the bottle (not sure what kind of paint would keep a translucent effect on the bottle), but that's just the aesthetic part.
Well, any general advice in bong construction? What materials/procedures to avoid/use?
Excuse me if i'm a little ignorant on the subject, I'm fairly new to the bong business :p
Will post pics when finished.
Here's a pict of the bottle itself

I think you would be better off using a slide instead of a carb. Look it up.
Also look up diffuser for a bong, that would be cool to have. There are a ton of things you can do, google is your friend here.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Good luck drilling into glass without breaking it. You should be able to find a drill bit specifically for glass at a hardware store though.
You could just make one from a plastic bottle too, its a lot easier. Just heat up a screwdriver with a torch then puncture it through the side for your hole.

Re: Making a homemade bong
To get a hole in that glass without breaking it, you're gonna have to use a diamond-tipped drill bit and have it under a constant flow of water.
Also, don't use copper. Use brass or stainless steel. Your local hardware store should have everything you need in the plumbing section.
I suggest getting a piece (maybe 2-3 feet) of PVC pipe with 1 end cap (for the body), a big, fat pen that you can take the ink & everything out of (female slider), a male glass slider and an o-ring to go on the male slider. You might also need a grommet for the female piece.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Get a stopper and run two hoses through it rather than drill the glass itself. You have about a 90% chance of breaking the glass without proper tools (and by proper tools I don't mean what you can buy at the local hardware store). Stoppers, however, are easy to come by and easy (and forgiving) to drill. Aluminum tubing coupled to a ratchet head makes for a great bowl, and you can use vinyl tubing to hit from.
And while you're out, get denatured alcohol to use as a cleaner.
And on a final note, don't use hot glue. Electrical tape is useful and can be very effective in moderation, but hot glue will melt into a goopy mess.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Just to update. I got the hole in the bottle done, it wasn't hard, just had to spend all afternoon doing that shit with the drill. Unfortunately i don't have time to finish the thing today, so i'll do it tomorrow (and post pics).
By the way, whoever said it was a 90% of me breaking it, i must be in the lucky 10% rite?

Fucking read the original thread. I said they are very hard to come by around here and expensive as fuck. Do you lack reading comprehension or just trying to make postcount without even reading shit in the thread?

But yeah don't use copper if you can find something else. I'll post a pic of my bong I made out of an everclear bottle and soft flexible copper tubing. It was pretty easy, no need to drill the glass. Though a large vodka bottle would've worked better.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Dunno if these image tags will work, I don't really know how to post images on totse..

http://i36.tinypic.com/20jw2w.jpg
http://i34.tinypic.com/2mrfdbn.jpg
And that's it, it's just an ever clear bottle with two copper pipes going into the lid. One goes to the bottom, one just goes through about 1/4 an inch with a hole in the lid for a jet after you've filled it with smoke so you can take your finger off it and suck all the smoke in.
As you can see it has no bowl. I don't really use it cause I don't like the nasty taste from the copper tubing. I just made it out of boredom. It does work though. Can use a foil bowl or a store bought bowl, or just put a joint right into the pipe and light.
I just sort of drilled the holes into the lid with knife till the pipes fit in snug. Sealed it with chewing gum but I didn't really need to.
I'm thinking of buying a bong but I think I'll also find better tubing, maybe aluminum, so I can make one out of a vodka bottle. The little everclear bottle doesn't cool it very well cause it doesn't have much water to pass through.
Really ghetto and shitty but like I said I was just bored.

Re: Making a homemade bong
two copper pipes
Copper releases pernicious fumes. It's very unwise to construct a smoking device from anything made of copper. For those who would like to check if a piece of metal they're planning to use to construct a smoking device is copper, understand this fact: copper turns green when it corrodes. If you see a sort of green on your copper colored piece of metal which looks like 'mold', it's safe to assume that your metal is copper.

Yeah, that's why I said I don't use it. I know copper oxide is pretty toxic. And while I'd never seen any copper oxide on copper tubing simply from water, the fumes are still enough to keep me from using it. The fumes give a terrible taste. When something tastes that bad it's pretty obvious it isn't healthy.

Okay i just finished this. Doesn't look too nice, but still needs some painting. After i took this pic, i trimmed the pipe a little shorter and put it back.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Well I can tell you from experience with hot glue, your bong won't work. It may work at first but the seal of the glue is going to break easily so it would've been better if the tube went down further. It will leak because the tube doesn't go down far past the hole. You kind of defeated the purpose of having a bong by not putting the tube down further, as the smoke won't have much water to pass through to cool it.

As of now it works, and once it breaks, i can move the tube down.

Re: Making a homemade bong
For sealant for my bong, I used a crap ton of rubber cement. It's not strong enough to really hold it in place at any angle (sadly) but it seals it nicely. Also good for glueing a bowl on.

Re: Making a homemade bong
copper, brass, and aluminum are bad to smoke through. Stainless steel is the best. Or glass. Stainless can take highest temperatures without giving off nasties though.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Use a stainless steel bowl. Make a diffuser. A carb is a simpler method as opposed to making a slide. Find a better way to attatch the bowl. Hot glue is going to melt as soon as the bowl starts getting hot.

What exactly didn't i listen from people here? The only comments i ignored were the "o hai bui one from a shop" ones. I avoided copper tubes, like more than one recommended, and I'll try one of the alternatives to hot glue to seal it, once it falls off.

Re: Making a homemade bong
Aluminum tubing is alright. And with the copper, you don't even have to heat it to get the nasty fumes. The fumes are there even when the metal is cold. Whichever metal you use, the flame is unlikely to heat the metal tube because the bowl shouldn't transfer enough heat. Aluminum also needs to be heated quite a lot more than a lighter will heat it, for it to release nasty fumes.
I feel bad for you, I can just walk into the shops and have a huge variety of water pipes to choose from. What the hell country are you in?

it depends what you want, they can range from a 10 dollar plastic bong to an epic 700 dollar bong with 8 diffusers. i would say the run of the mill pretty average 1 foot glass bong would cost about 80 bucks. anything less and its going to be of shitty quality.
