Everything included Linux?
Hey so I have this cheap ass laptop that has Vista, It seems to be running pretty fucking terrible right now so I want to "downgrade". Not to XP because I need to keep this 100% legit.
So what i need to is instructions to acquire like.. an all in one linux bundle or something. I know NOTHING of Linux so please, bear with me.
The laptop will be used as a internet browser, movie watcher, and word processor.
So is there like a bundle out there that comes with all that shit that I can just download put onto a thumb drive and install on a formatted comp?
Please and thank you.

You are looking for (k)Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the GNOME desktop (more like MAC), and Kubuntu is the KDE desktop (more like windows).
Both are super-noob friendly, come with a lot of good stuff, and anything you want can be downloaded at a simple command.
apt-get install ***

Re: Everything included Linux?
GNOME is a lot prettier than KDE. This is a massive upgrade.
Ubuntu has everything you need to do those things. It'll install off of a LiveCD, though. A flash drive might be a bit more effort.

Re: Everything included Linux?
I ended up going with UBUNTU. from Ubuntu.com
Everything seemed to be going great, An installer came up gave me a few options I ended up going with like a tryout thing that wouldn't get rid of windows but also didnt completley install itself.. So i restarted, choose to boot up with Ubuntu. loading screen came up finished then went to a DOS looking screen and it said "Enter Help for full list of Commands" so I typed in HELP and a list of commands came up as promised.
The Problem is none of the commands seem to do anything, i type continue and and the same old prefix or whatever it's called just come up below it. this goes for every command ive tried including exec.
Any ideas?

Re: Everything included Linux?
So now the only problem seems to be getting youtube videos to work and what version of pidgin to install, i think it gives the choice of mac windows or fedora.

Re: Everything included Linux?
Pidgin is installed by default. Applications>Internet>Pidgin.
Install the SWFdec plugin if you want youtube to work, install Gnash if you want flash in general to work. SWFdec focuses mostly on youtube at the cost of other types of flash. You can install then via the bar that pops down in Firefox when you go to a page with flash.
(You are using Ubuntu, right? I'm assuming you are.)
Pidgin handles MSN. OpenOffice (also installed by default) handles documents. Totem (also installed by default) handles movies, but if it doesn't have a codec, it'll prompt you to install it. Just check the box and hit apply if/when that comes up. Rhythmbox is the music player installed by default, and it's the one I use.
