Cutting Oxy Acetylene Tanks.
I was Given 8 tanks. Four Oxygen, and Four acetylene tanks. They were very old tanks and i was unsure of how long the gas had been inside since they were marked 1970. I called up my local scrapyard and they said in order to buy the tanks off of me i would half to cut them in half. Now my question is How in the hell do i cut the damn thing in half? Im thinking of just purging the tank out and using a plasma torch. Any advice or better methods would be highly appreciated.

Re: Cutting Oxy Acetylene Tanks.
That's about all you can do. Or use an OA torch to cut the OA bottles:P. I would drill a hole in the bottom or side of them, and leave the valve open so the expanding air inside the tank can escape, if you don't the first few inches will just have the expanded air coming right back through the hole you just cut, throwing sparks and flames towards you.
I also find it weird that you need to cut it in HALF for them to be able to accept it. Most places allow just a 4-5 inch diameter hole to be cut in the side. That's the way it is around here anyway.

^^^ Good thinking.
But also, I've heard that once you do manage to drill a hole, it's a good idea to fill the tank as full as you can get it with water, to purge out any remaining flammable stuff.

I was also going to suggest just such a thing. A way people usually cut steel with a torch is to get it really hot and then have a large spray of oxygen which will react to the iron s vigorously that it will simply melt where it is applied. Fairly easy and simple method.

*facepalm*
I think it's a mixture of one or more of the following: rock wool, cancrete, and/or agamassan and dissolved in acetone or dimethylformamide.

Re: Cutting Oxy Acetylene Tanks.
Well, not the acetylene bottle I saw... It was full of a common lint material.
I googed & found Balsa &/or Asbestos as other materials.
Glasswool would seem to be a ideal media though.
& there is Acetone too.
not 'facepalm' material I think....
