Or ya know you could just outright ask them about themself (obviously have a cover story and "reason" for doing this.

Or if you want more info out of him you could try a method the 419 scammers shave been doing for quiet a while and place fake subscription forms (obviously to be about something of interest to them to subscribe to) through their letter box and have them send the form back to a drop location. You can get so much more out of them that way including SSNs and CC details along with their address, phone number and name.
