| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more! |

Renting instead of buying.
I know some games are must own and but I just got gamefly and thought I would try it out, and I must say I think I'm going to start JUST renting as opposed to buying. I mean, if you really play the shit out of a game, you'll probably beat it in a day or two, and most of its awesomeness is gone in a week.
I know another friend that does this, he rents a few games a month, plays them, returns, and repeats. I think I'm going to play alot more and enjoy alot more games like this.
Anybody else do this?

Re: Renting instead of buying.
in my opinion: if it's not worth buying, than it's hardly even worth playing. most developers of a good game should take into mind length and replay value.
but then again, that's where Okami really lost me. but I still wouldn't have a collection without it.

Eh, not always? I mean, I haven't played assassins creed yet, but a friend of mine beat it in 2 days, and did everything there was to do in a week. I can think of plenty of games, mostly games without poor or no online play, that are worth renting.

Re: Renting instead of buying.
I used to mock people that rented games "oh can't commit can we"? "Part time gamer, full time loser!!" But then games started costing $60 and most suck. My name is Mr. Smasher and I have been renting for 6 months. "Hi mr smasher". The moment I started renting, it felt like I had SO much to play and enjoy, and I have been. I've played the shit out of some shitty games CAUSE I could. Ya. Its nice.

Re: Renting instead of buying.
It's a good idea. Back when I was younger, I used to rent games all the time. Now that I'm older, my criteria for a good game more refined, and my tastes more sophisticated, I hate nearly every video game.
If I had the urge to play more video games, I would definitely belong to one of those netflix-type things for video games.

How is that taking you out of context? You're saying that no game is worth playing that isnt worth buying. Just because every game isnt some AAA title from a AAA developer like Valve doesnt mean it's not even worth playing. Look at a smaller game like Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. It's a comic game and it's not some huge blockbuster title, but it's goddamn fun and well worth playing.

Re: Renting instead of buying.
I only buy AAA games that are worthy of my $60.
MGS4 is worthy because i love the series and ive already beat it 3 times and im on my forth playthrough. I love it and will play it another couple hundred times before i die. Its a timeless classic like Sonic 2 and super mario world.
GTA4 was worth the $60. Sure, its the same old same old, but i got about 20 hours out of it. My friends play it all the time when they come over so thats good.
Call of duty 4. Beat single player in 5 hours. Awesome single player. Love the sniper level. Online is the best online game ive ever played. Ive put 50+ hours into it already. Well worth the money.
Uncharted. Awesome game, paid $50 for it, beat it twice already. On 3rd playthrough. I love it and its worthy of being in my collection.
Ratchet, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Folklore. Got all of them for $40 and they are easily worth it. All awesome games.
I got many more games well worth the prices, but ill leave it at that. The PS3 PWNS!

Re: Renting instead of buying.
Oh. I lost track of the thread topic. I dont rent games at all. Waste of money. They cost $12 to rent at blockbuster. So i say, screw it and just buy the games that i know are AAA quality.
Why should i spend $12 a game or $30 a month for unlimited rentals on crappy games not worth owning. I see no point in playing only "good/decent" games. I have no desire to waste my time on crap like assassins creed, GRID, any ubisoft game etc. Fuck that.
Id rather buy games.

Re: Renting instead of buying.
My general rule of thumb for this is if the game gives more entertainment hours devided by 2 than total cost it is worth buying otherwise it is worth aquiring by some other means. Music is generally a prime exmaple of this depending on the song I could listen to it for hours total or only a couple times. My most Listend to song according to my Mp3 player was listend to 65 times on a four minute track which is bout 4:20 (my immature self lols) so maybe I should go out and buy it but, then again it is so easy to P word it. Same with movies It is just to easy to stream/DL
(Gamplay hours )
