| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Being Traced through a Proxy

i am using http://www.ninjacloak.com/ as a proxy...is there a chance of the activities being traced back to me?

Re: Being Traced through a Proxy
It wont be like in the movies, where they are tracing you as you are doing it. They will note the IP address of the proxy used, contact the proxy host, and request logs. From there, they should have your IP address, and they will inform your ISP of your activities.

Re: Being Traced through a Proxy
^^That's exactly right. One-hop proxies are only anonymous if you can wipe their logs, and their router's logs, and the logs of every router along the chain.
Use Tor, or use several proxies in a SOCKS chain. Make sure the proxies are in different countries, preferably countries that don't get along with yours.

Re: Being Traced through a Proxy
I also have a question about using proxies.
If I logged in on my account, let's say an e-mail account, can the network administrators access or see my password even though I'm using a proxy in logging in?

Most websites use ssl encryption, (Little padlock down at the bottom of your screen/web browser) https just make sure it that instead of http

It depends. What you have here is this:
network-->)
you=====)======proxy=======site
boundary->)
IF the data going from you to the proxy is encrypted in some way, then no, nobody eavesdropping on that section of the stream will be able to see any data, including passwords. If it is unencrypted, then it won't help you at all.

lol...
D'ye know what HTTP-accessed website-based proxies are? "Centralized subpeona management." If you do anything more controversial than post "I love George Bush! The US is the best country in the universe!!"... you're fucked.
If I had a better knowledge of your parameters, I could give more complete advice, but there are basically a few places that can fuck you over...
- an outside government.
- the endpoint in the connection.
- a middle relay on the connection.
- your ISP.
...this is, of course, not counting physical access to your machine, blah blah blah.
An outside government will USUALLY have to start in one or two places. The first is that they raid the logs of the endpoint - through subpeona or seizure.
This is what proxies might help you with. Your IP is not in their logs. The proxy is. Of course, if the proxy ip is "corporateproxyprovider.net," incorporated in the same governmental jurisdiction as the investigating government, it's also considered amazingly resource-unintensive to go look you up.
OTOH, if you're sitting in N. Korea using a non-webbased proxy in Iran to visit a site in the US for petty-scale "crime," like posting goatse imagetrolls ("transmission of obscenity across state lines" or something)... there's little to no fucking chance that a subpeona from the US government is going to hop that chain of international borders for petty shit. You're pretty fuckin' safe.
...this tutorial is going to end here, for now. If you're really intelligent, the outline above MIGHT help you patch the rest of the security issues in the use of a global digital printing press safely. Please note that active attacks - either by the endpoint machine or injected along the process - weren't noted or covered by the least.
Have fun. 'n read and know before you do. Computer security tutorials can be found at any credible child pornography distribution community. Enjoy.

OK. I got that.
In addition to that, what I was really intending to ask is if the network administrators for example, in my school can see my password if I, for example access my e-mail at school (Use the computers in the school).
That's why I use proxy sites at school (Most of them are already blocked).

If the transport protocol for your password is encrypted, then yes. Otherwise, then no.
Elaboration: If you're going to http://gmail.com, your password is transported as cleartext. If you're going to http s://gmail.com, your password is encrypted via SSL. If you're using POP, IMAP, or SMTP, your password is visible. If you are using SSL or TLS, it isn't.
If you can't verify the SSL fingerprint, then your admin might be running a MITM on you. If you're using a school computer, the keyboard could have a hardware keylogger, or the software could be using a keylogger. If you don't control the physical machine, there isn't really an end to the things you could be up against.
