| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more! |

Do you think gaming could be considered by as a sport?
I mean, bass fishing is.
and fishing itself is usually an excuse to drink.

Re: Do you think gaming could be considered by as a sport?
no, not at all.
and especially in the sense to where there are afterschool programs based on it, that could potentially get you through college on a scholarship.

No, but I also don't consider fishing a sport.

Re: Do you think gaming could be considered by as a sport?
I don't really think so, but then again a sport is defined as an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. People play it competitively, but I don't think there's a really set-in-stone set of rules for the whole thing. So I'm guessing no.

With things like MLG, or CGS, you do not think that a set rules could be set up?
Championship gaming series seems to have a good start, playing multiple games, with a scoring system based on more than just who wins or loses.

Re: Do you think gaming could be considered by as a sport?
There's a difference, but I forget what I use as a yard stick. Chess? Game not a sport. Fishing? Sport not a game.
Even chess tournaments are just a big collection of games.

No. It will never be a sport.

I'm not referring to anything specific. I meant gaming in general. Calling gaming in general a sport is like saying any game with a ball should be considered a sport. You can't take a broad category and automatically call everything in that category a sport. I admit,MLG and CGS could meet the qualifications to be a sport, but if you call gaming a sport in itself, what would that make of Single-Player only games like Bioshock? You would have to call it competitive games gaming, and then get a consensus on what games qualify as sport. It all seems much too complicated to deal with to me. I'll just simply call it gaming to save myself trouble.

Re: Do you think gaming could be considered by as a sport?
I should also mention Super Battle Opera (SBO), which is a huge fighting game tournament in Japan. Basically, a converted boxing stadium with machines and players in the centre and four big screens suspended from the ceiling.
The American equivalent would be the eVo tournament, which is big enough to attract players from around the world.
So the players and the fans are there, someone just needs to figure out how to make money off this.

Only if you consider a test (ie. Math test in school) a sport, than yes.
I don't think you can call gaming a sport, no.

Re: Do you think gaming could be considered by as a sport?
First define sport.
But for all the definitons of sport I have been given, either gaming qualifes, or several established sports don't qualify.
For anyone say it isn't a sport, what's your definition of a sport?

I guess that is all that matters, your personal definition of what a sport is.

Exactly.
Going by the colloquial definition of sport, though, I'd have to say gaming qualifies.
There's golf, fishing, darts, pool and other lazy sports. The descriptions of sports which I've heard to disqualify gaming will disqualify those, too.
My personal definition, I don't consider gaming a sport. I define sport as something which requires a high degree of physical fitness in one form or another, and is focused around competing, either individually or as a team, to complete a goal-based, physical objective.
