Breaking Somebody's Neck With Your Bare Hands
Like you see Steven Segal, and all those other action movie guys do. You see the hero sneak up behind the guy, put one hand on the bad guy's chin, put the other on the back of his head, and twist forcefully.
Is it based on a real life move?
Is it even possible to break somebody's neck like that, or would it just spin them off their feet? What if said target was prone on their stomach?
Im not some mall ninja, or some college guy trying to invent a new sexual craze. Just curious.

Umm... basically, yes.
It is my understanding that the US military spends a lot of work training in snapping necks... at least as a proportion of their not-to-specialized subsets of their unarmed training. Things might have changed since {unnamed family member or friend} got out of {ancient war}, and the rear assasination was slightly different... but there was a thirdhand rumor that some of their other final eliminations were essentially similar in angle.
In more firsthand knowledge, other arts execute somewhat like that as well - part of the reason I laugh my ass off when someone with three months of muay thai starts going on a "traditional martial arts are useless" kick... (well, that, and muay thai is a traditional martial art, 'n they're usually trying to portray theirs as "the one true way," but...)
Doing it properly is not *exactly* like that, but it would *look* exactly like that to anyone who wasn't busy critiquing minute form from their own training. I won't get into the details of difference when we're sitting here a few subforums away from BI, but... yes.
If you're interested in snapping necks, you might want to take up judo. They probably won't teach you to snap necks, but they'll teach you quite well everything else you'd use while snapping necks. 'n trying to just copy it off TV would be easier to actively defend against than someone who had been trained to do it properly (usually, by the time you're learning them, "paranoia" is a major component crafting technique - "then KEEP snapping their neck" is usually crafted into doctrine)... but you'd still have a risk of paralyzing or killing people, despite the slight differences.
If you have to ask if such a thing is possible, you wouldn't even notice those differences if they were occuring in front of you, and I'm not in a mood to teach people on the internet... but... yes, it's as close to that as you or most people would be able to tell, and close enough that you shouldn't do that to anyone because it just might work.
Now ya know...

Re: Breaking Somebody's Neck With Your Bare Hands
I don't think its possible just like the movies. I think it would rip the tendons and muscles on the side of the neck but not a clean snap. If you've got into that position you're better off just choking them while controlling them. Jujitsu teaches you this.
The only way I can think of maybe snapping someones neck was what they taught commandos in world war two to jerk the chin back on German soldiers wearing helmets so that the back of the helmet would come down onto the spine. Even here I don't think you'd get enough force to do it and it would be better to either choke them or slit the throat.
I'm not a ninja and I don't play one on TV so I don't know. You might want to have a google because someones bound to have asked this question before.

Re: Breaking Somebody's Neck With Your Bare Hands
Use a reverse clinchand knee the base of the skull or cervicle vertabrea. the pull combined with the force of the knee should seperate the brain stem from the skull or break the vertabrea backwards resulting in dleath or paralysis. Although that is not really the question it should do the trick. I don't think you would even need to take it that far, a good knee to the back of the head can cause unconciousness or even death. And if he is not dead you can easly choke him out after that, or a well deliverd double stomp to the head at any angle will end it quick.
(sorry for spelling issues to much tatto)

Re: Breaking Somebody's Neck With Your Bare Hands
This one time, I sneezed and my head turned so violently that it popped my neck and pinched a nerve. I felt a shockwave go through my body. I've always worried about sneezing and my head exploding or something like that. Now it looks like it's possible to break your neck too.

Re: Breaking Somebody's Neck With Your Bare Hands
Yes.
I dont know of the technique from the standpoint of the movies where a guy basically pats a guy in the chin and head in different directions and you hear a blood curdling crack but I do know that if you approached someone from behind, got a full choke on them, knee to the back to bend them, pulled them back so they lose balance and at the right time pull up you would basically hang someone in your arms. But...for you to understand what I just said you would probably need it demonstrated anyway. Teh internets is nawt how juu lurn marshull rt's.

I've been trained in a technique similar to, but superior to this. I have not been able to test it on someone full force because it involves somewhat crippling them while applying force to (crushing, hopefully) their windpipe, and then applying the choke (with more leverage if necessary). I've practiced positioning for it from a face-to-face fighting position. It's difficult, but possible to maneuver yourself and the opponent where something like is possible. And by possible, I mean I've practiced it against resisting opponents and have succeeded. I don't believe the technique I know alone could break a neck, unless I backed out and applied even more torque the collapsing opponent.

They do not exactly 'show' you how to break someones neck; they demonstrate a rear-kill technique where grab throat under chin and stab through the base of the neck, said technique could also be modified to snap someones neck. If you are personally looking for a quick kill move use the above, or just stab them in the liver; it takes far less practice.

The US Military teaches several techniques. One is a stab to the kidney, one through the diaphragm, strike to the throat, RNC/sentry hold removal....

Not exactly. I spent a little time at Ft. Benning, though, and fraternize with soldiers, marines, and sailors. Talking to one right now. Been in a few heterosexual relationships with members of the Armed Forces. I shoot at federal ranges with members of the 82nd Airborne, etc.
I also did a little bit helping train police cadets.

Heart is better than subclavian artery. Subclavian artery is better than kidney. Kidney is better than jugular. By throat you mean jugular. Jugular is better than liver.
Why would you sneak up on someone to stab them in the liver?
and for the love of christ dude, stop with your sign off. People can read your username just fine.

Re: Breaking Somebody's Neck With Your Bare Hands
You'd probably have to be pretty damn big to be able to snap someone's neck. Like in the film The 6th Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger snaps some guys neck; I seriously wouldn't put it past him to be able to do something like that (at least, in his prime).
