There's been an obscenely long-lived trend of comic book movies lately, which looks to continue at least into next summer with the Watchmen movie and probably into perpetuity with the huge success of the Batman franchise. There's basically been no mention, though, of my favorite graphic novel--Neil Gaiman's Sandman series--being adapted into a movie, except for the odd comment leaking out about how this or that script was shit, or that it's stuck in development hell forever.

So, do you think there will ever be a Sandman movie? If there was, could it be any good? What other movies would it need to be like to make it work? Etc.

I feel it would have to have a really different tone than most comic book movies to work, by which I mean it couldn't be a summer blockbuster at all. I envision something more along the lines of Dead Man or The Fountain--very atmospheric, mystical, etc. I think it could work, but I'm sceptical about whether, with the budget required to make it properly, it could ever get approved.

Not in a million years.

Also, another thought... what about more like a TV show, or mini-series? Part of what made it great is how episodic it was anyway--each book a different style, an almost tangential overall story arc, etc. Maybe HBO could pull it off...

God, I hope not.

It could only be as bad as a Captain America movie.

HBO is already working on a Preacher adaptation (that is if they're still even bothering with it), so I suppose it's not entirely out of the question.

Who knows.
