Default Keying someones car... only for extreme situations

Hypothetically, if you were to key someones car, when would you do it, and what kind of action would make you do it?

Just wondering, because I've seen people say "do it if hes a dick", all the way to "do it only in the most extreme circumstance."

Does it cost a shit load to fix?
What if you're caught? Jail time?
Can it set off an alarm?

They say that because it's a real low blow.

Personally I've just walked down the side of it in the car park and run my key along it while walking and put it back in my pocket just as I reach the end and then keep walking along as if I was just doing nothing anyway.

When would I do it?
Anytime.

What action?
If they were being a dick with their car in any way, shape or form or if it was their pride and joy and they'd done something to piss me off.

Keying a car is a pretty damn good revenge technique. It's discreet yet so effective, it makes me wet.
The other option is to throw a roll of pennies at a car, but that is more noticible than just casually walking by with a key in hand.
I know that it's a pain in the ass to get fixed, very expensive, cause you got to get the paint redone and such, so I personally would not do it to anyone, because I would really never want it done to me, but I have good friends who have done it to cheating boyfriend's cars. Kind of funny, but very vicious, IMO.

Some places can be expensive to get the scratches out. However if the mark's insurance covers vandalism, he will only have to pay a deductible. Some insurance company deductibles cost more than others. If his policy does not cover vandalism he will have to foot the bill himself.

Possible or you may get probation, community service and/or a fine depending if you have a criminal record. And if you get caught the the mark will know who you are from the police report and he will take you to civil court to get back any money he has to pay to get a paint job.

I guess it depends on how sensitive the alarm is. I remember a talking car alarm on the market years ago that will tell you when the car is armed, if you so much as brush up against it.

If you need to key a car, stealth is vital.

Does it cost a shit load to fix?

Yes. If you get it down to the primer, it'll have to be sanded and re-painted. They'll probably have to do the whole car too because you can't really paint one part of your car and expect it to blend in. It can get to be a couple thousand, depending on how bad it is.

What if you're caught? Jail time?

It is criminal damage to property aka vandalism and carries a fine and a misdemeanor charge (meaning up to 1 year in prison).

Can it set off an alarm?

It can if it's a really sensitive alarm. Most alarms take a couple of good bumps though, so just do it really quick and don't bump into it.

When would you do it?

Whenever. It's easy to be discrete. Just making sure no one is staring at you dead on and you'll be good.

What kind of action would make you do it?

Probably none. Just kick the guy's ass if he pissed you off that bad. Knowing that you want to do it kind of makes me want to kick your ass because I've had it done to me and it sucks.

I prefer retractable Sharpies to keys. Nothing beats the satisfaction of laying an unsolicited racing stripe down the side of some asshole's car.

I like the idea of using a sharpie because they aren't gonna cost them anything to fix its just gonna be taxing on their time.
