Stealing from a library
So yeah, there was a book I spotted today at a college library that I wanted to check out, but I have no ID since I'm only taking summer classes there. I decided to simply rip off all the metal strips I saw, and I assumed this would be enough to be able to walk out of the building without the sensor going off. Unfortunately, the sensor did go off, but I just stopped, looked confused, and kept walking. Anyway, do you guys know where else the damn thing could be hidden on the book? I didn't think they could/would peel back the paper on the front cover to put one, but it seems like this is the only possibility.

Stealing from a library is like the meanest thing you can do. You're not even fighting a powerful corporation, just a bunch of cranky old ladies who get off by telling kids to be quiet.

They aren't the people I'm fighting either, since they don't own it. I'm actually planning on returning the book when I get done; I just can't check out books because I am only taking summer courses and therefore don't have a school ID.

Re: Stealing from a library
Yeah dude, don't steal from libraries. That's screwed up.
...
Steal from Barnes and Nobles and Borders instead. Those are the assholes that don't care about losing a dime or two.
And as for the detectors in library books: they usually hide one in the back of the book, behind the little envelope where the check-out card goes.
Don't ask how I learned that one.
Those old ladies are slick mother fuckers.

Re: Stealing from a library
As said above, this isn't even a bad idea. It's a stupid idea.
After reading the topic to this thread I thought, "You're stupid enough to steal from a place that will lend to you."
If you don't have your ID, then fucking come back later.
I hope that you return that book.
It's cause of niggers like you that I could never find a copy of the Codex Seriphinianus in the library to look though.

Read the thread to find out why I can't get the book.

Fuck you. Steal from a bookstore instead, like Barnes and Nobles that marks up all its books. Not only is it moral, but also it's much easier since B&N rarely puts tags in books, and security is very sparse/very few if any cameras.
|
You're in the wrong forum if you're here to discuss morals. Like I said, I am going to return the book, so I am basically just borrowing it. It isn't stupid. Should I pay $50 to get a school ID so I can check out one book? And for the record, I don't have a barnes and nobles.

Check in the inner spine (where the gutters are inside the book), and the outer spine (between the book's original binding and the library's binding). There's an illustrated guide here.
Alternatively, see if the library has any openable windows, then simply toss it out and retrieve it when you leave (you may wish to wrap it in a sweatshirt or towel first if you're worried about damage).
Though as you've already found out, if you just keep walking generally nothing happens. If you have a cellphone pretend to be talking on that, then point to it and roll your eyes if anyone looks at you.
For those who still fail to grasp why someone would want to steal books from the library, even though the OP has already clearly stated his reasons, see Why I Steal from Libraries.

Where the fuck do you go to school that charges 50 for an ID? Anyways, if you are paying for summer classes, you are paying for library usage fees... Therefore, you are not getting the book for free jackass.

Thank you man. I wish this place had more quality posters like you. I've read the guides you've put together, and it is good to see people contributing rather than sitting back bitching while contributing nothing.
I never thought about them being able to track your every checkout, which is a very good point. I, do, however, hate the bullshit fines that I get for the books. I once returned a few books a week late and was expected to pay $14 worth of fines. On another occasion I tried to renew online three times, but their website was "being upgraded." I called them up to ask if they could renew it on the phone, but their "system was down". I tried using the automated service to renew, but it too wouldn't fucking work. After two weeks of this bullshit, they expected me to pay a late fee. I called them and they said they couldn't remove the fine, but they could renew the books.
I also love how if I forget to renew online by one day then you can no longer renew, you are forced to let the god damn late charges pile up. One time I was screwed because I was stuck in a place with no internet so I was going to have to renew a day or two late, but alas, "NO RENEWAL ALLOWED DUE TO OVERDUE." Oh, and another time where I checked out some books before a school break and their website wouldn't let me renew, yet school was out so no one could possibly check the books out and I couldn't return them.
Anyway, enough ranting. I appreciate your post and knowledge.

Listen you little fuck, whether or not I am paying for library usage fees is something you have no knowledge of. Moreover, it doesn't fucking matter, because you have to have an ID to check out the books, which you have to pay for. Are you getting the picture yet, you piece of shit, or do you just love being a douchebag whether or not your arguments make sense?

You noob. You clearly need an ID to do anything there.
At colleges here though, you don't need to get one. Tuition includes that. Clearly not where he is going.

A guy I know used to check out various 'leftwing' books in college, until one day the cops paid him a visit to ask questions about some 'campus activism' that had been going on. Just a zany coincidence, no?...except that they explicitly asked him about the books he had checked out . So yeah, those checkout histories matter.

To get around the renewal problem, just sneak the book back in whenever you're done with it, and put it back on the shelf. Then call up the library to dispute the late fees, saying that you returned it weeks ago. They'll send someone out to the stacks to check, and sure enough it's there--chalking it up to clerical oversight and deducting the late fees .
If you know that you'll be away from the library for prolonged periods of time and so won't be able to do the above, a small variation is to make a copy of the barcode of a random book (pick something dry that has little chance of actually being checked out), and put it in place of your target book's barcode. Then when you start getting the late fee notices, just call them up and, again, say that you already returned the book weeks ago.

These people are controlling peoples access to knowledge. Its totalitarian so if this guy feels that he wants the information without paying for an ID hes well within his rights to. The books don't belong to an individual so let him go. So long as he sneaks the book back he's completely right.

I didn't know that you could possibly get that I was actually worried about this in the first place out of my post. I just wanted to know where else the sensor could be hidden. Of course they can't track me.

Fucking idiots like you piss me off. All you can do is fucking bitch, and you're the main problem with this forum, and this world. What kind of a male doesn't enjoy seeing a naked hot female? Either you're gay, or you're a tight-ass nerd who is afraid of sex.

Look for my thread in HB if you want an explanation for why I'm doing this, otherwise just shut the fuck up. You're the first person on these boards to complain about me posting porn; most other people actually like it and respond with pictures of their own.

Re: Stealing from a library
Dang guys, lay off. Stealing from a library is like stealing from the government. We pay taxes. Taxes fund libraries. So I say more power to you. You probably paid for that book anyway.
Unless it was a school library. Who cares. Schools have enough money anyway.
Plus, the fact that he's returning it makes it like it was never gone. So some kid comes in looking for the same book while he has it....big deal. He'll be like, "Well its not here." and come back later after the guy has returned it.
Chill out.
