Build your own racetrack
Sorry mods if you want this in diy but i like this place better, anyway....
Most people here would have been around a dirt racetrack on somebody's farm but what im after is a proper tarmac covered challenging track.
So how much would it cost if i did it myself and what kind of features would you include?

Re: Build your own racetrack
I think you're biting off a little more than you can chew here.
Building a road (basically what a racetrack is) is a rather complex process. You can't just lay the tarmac on top of soil - you have to dig down, lay down underbed hardcore and sand, level the surface and then finally tarmac. If you don't do this, your track will just fall to bits when it rains or when a few cars go over it.
For a small, say 1km track, I'd guess at $100,000 being a low estimate if you were to have it built. I doubt you have the equipment to do it yourself...

for an idea of just how much work it is.

Re: Build your own racetrack
And race tracks are usually very 'high quality' roads.
And by that I mean they are incredibly smooth.

Re: Build your own racetrack
I dont want anything high quality or anything, just for private use + the dirt is pretty hard around here.
anyway the reason i asked i because in the future i plan to have many cars, so many i wont be able to afford rego. i think you see where thats going.

You left a few 0's off there. Hot mix (black top) alone would break that $100,000 budget if I'm on the money here, and for the rest of the road materials alone you'd be looking at multiplying that figure by 18-20!
Concrete, with a hot mix surface (Which is how many race tracks are AFAIK) would still be pretty damned expensive.
EDIT: That doesn't include the survey, laying out, and razing & laser leveling of the site, either, though you can do that yourself if you have the equiptment and determination. It does cover excavation of the 'road' as far as I can recall.
Then of course you need a nice big workshed slash very crude and manly clubhouse, so throw another $100k+ on top of that.
...and don't waste your money trying to do it the legal way by getting planning permission, you definitely won't even come close to being granted planning permission. We can all dream though, and I'd like something along the lines Fujimi Kaido x Brands Hatch..
..if that weren't a fictional track (Kaido).

Re: Build your own racetrack
Yeah, go a dirt track cos it's going to be more fun than an asphalt track anyway. You might have trouble with that depending where you live though since you've basically got sand everywhere there, or pea gravel (iron ore) type shit on slopes..
Are you in Mandurah?

Re: Build your own racetrack
You want a dragstrip or racetrack?
If it's a strip I'd just say to get that dirt to a flat surface, very, very, VERY flat, then maybe try to compact it as much as possible.
Failing that, you can spend thousands of dollars to have one built.
It wont cost hundreds of thousands like the guys above state, not for a not-so-great track. I personally know people who own dragstrips and to have the entire strip built cost somewhere on the 80k mark, but that is a higher quality track and JUST the track, not including the shutdown, or the prep line, fences, equipment, etc.
For a VERY not-so-great (I am trying to keep from saying "shitty") strip, it will cost you a few thousand though, probably like 15k.
I say it's not really worth it, as you can go to a track for like $10 these days if you want to race, and not just watch.

You're pulling this out of your arse, aren't you? If you weren't, you would know that a hard compacted dirt road is the worst possible suggestion you could make for a drag track. Even clay is quite a lot better!
If you want a drag strip, it had better be paved with Ashphalt, concrete, or somehting else! And you'll want specialised hot mix surface ($$$) for the top, too, for drag strips.
That method you named would make a really fun dirt race tracck though, but you'd want it to be at least partially clay if compact, otherwise loose and sandy, or you'll find yourself resurfacing it all the fucken time.

Considering that it costs between $175 and $210 per square metre* (or for a total price, something like $530 - $630 per cubic metre) for anything even close to appropriate, you're not going to get much of a track for a few thousand dollars.
*Labour inclusive, so it can become a fair bit cheap er - but it's still not fucken cheap.
It will cost shitloads to build a full race track.

and I personally know people who design them! ...among other things (AND I myself am also doing a course that sits pretty well in the civil engineering field (I'm not training as an engineer though), and would you believe I have to quote these type of things all the fucken time).

I'm not saying that's impossible even though I do doubt it, but Ed Lister definitely wouldn't be able to pull strings, use his own earthmoving equiptment, hire his own labour for next to nothing, used very shity materials, and suck cocks or whatever else these people have done to get those prices.
