The town I live in doesn't have any but when I go in to the city I am usually respectable towards them. One time I got a foot long sub from subway and gave one half to a hobo while I ate the other. He turned out to be an incredibly interesting person and was in the Korean war. Went to a park and shared a little bit of bud with him.

I don't always make the point to be this nice to them, that was a one off thing but I do give change and don't treat them like I am any better.

Panhandlers piss me off so fucking much.

I have nothing against homeless people though. I've even been homeless myself for brief spurts. But panhandling is so fucking annoying.

If I go out to eat and I see a homeless person, I'll get them a meal, but rarely do I ever hand out cash. Just in case they are the stereotypical druggie homeless man, I'd rather buy them something that'll def help them. But besides the food thing, I treat them like any other person I see in the city. Which is not really taking notice of them unless I'm sitting nearby, in which case I'll make small talk if I'm just sitting idly.

I met a bum in downtown Nashville once upon a time. About 3 or so blocks from the atnt building (batman!). Anyways, this guy played nothing but hendrix all day, which was awesome, he kicked the shit out of a panhandler, and basically had a whole fucking lot of good advice. I bought him a meal, he was awesome.

seeing as hw I use to be homeless and pan myself I'm always courteous with "the homeless", unfortunately I can't be as nice as the other people in this thread giving food and stuff since I'm still so poor that I often go without food myself.
Always have a kind word or two and I'm always down for a conversation.

Homeless people are some of the most interesting people to have conversations with. Well, the ones with a bit of sanity left at least.

I've spent some time on the streets and done more then my fair share of begging and panhandling, so yeah, now if I have any spare change I'll give it. Not a lot of homeless people around here though, any there are I know by name so usually stop to talk as well.

Panhandling is fucking horrible in Austin. Be being a stupid little susceptible whiteboy, I get asked for change and whatnot when I go. One time some nigger asked me if I had a dollar for change. I gave a dollar and he game 65 cents. Fuck my life.

Most of them tend to be sleeping all the time in some corner around here. Others are annoying as fuck and I just ignore them. But there are a few ones that provide decent talk, insight and lulz so I give them change, but I sometimes find myself making them happier offering them a cigarette than a coin.

The homeless people in the DC area are strange to me. They ask for cash to buy a specific thing, but if you hand them that exact thing they won't take it. Makes it a little too obvious that they just want booze or something. You'd think a homeless person would really want some food, guess not. So I usually just smile and say hi or stop to chat. A lot of them seem to actually appreciate it. Plus I'm usually broke anyway. Damn Metro and gas

It's easy to get food other ways. To steal it and find it. You NEED money for drugs, can't just go mugging your dealer. well you could, but it'll most likely get you killed. Stealing old doughnuts from a Tim Hortons dumpster after hours wont.

me and my friend were voluntarily homeless for about 3 months, we walked and hitched our way from new york to new orleans. we played guitar for money and shoplifted what we couldn't buy. had some fun times and some rough times. we never begged.

we talked to a lot of homeless dudes. helped alot out. the crazy ones, we wrote down what they said, and had extended conversations with them if possible, the craziest we gave inordinate amounts of LSD, hung out till it kicked in, then wrote down whatever they said. homeless people are pretty much the same as homefull people, only with less bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, closets, and yards.

I ignore them. It's very nice when you ignore them walking by with a pocket full of jingling change.

Even if they have an interesting story, I'm not in the least interested in giving change. Why should I give them money that I have worked for?

I know that some of them struggle to get a meal every day, but in the long run. I'm looking out for myself, friends and family before some strange in the street.

To compensate, I donate blood. Which could, Ironically, be used for a homeless person. Heh, at least I know my blood will be used for good, not for another bottle of dirty wine.

I have no respect for them. They can get a job at a restaurant or convenience store like every other person with no skills or education.
