Re: Best way to cut plastic?
Use a blowtorch to heat up a screwdriver/metal piece and cut through it. It makes a lot less smoke than a soldering iron.
But a hacksaw would be just as easy.

Loud, but quick/effective.
I would use the soldering iron, but take a blanket and drape it over the projector. Go under the blanket and melt the handle. Most of the fumes would be absorbed by the blanket, as long as it is thick.
Now, if noise weren't an issue, this would be the way to go:

Edit: The sprinklers you mentioned are activated when a smoke detector goes off:

I would just tape the detector up, and then use the soldering iron.

i agree with this although if you cannot carry a hacksaw with you for some reason, any serrated blade would work very well.

If you can't pick that type of lock, you fail at crime. Seriously. Those are the easiest to open of all the locks I've ever worked on.

Re: Best way to cut plastic?
If your hell bent on taking the handle out, just hit it like you are busting a stick over your leg, but if you have a few minutes, flip it over and open the case and slip the chain off the handle and put enough screws back in it for transport, or hiding in the ceiling until you can move it.
Oh by the way, there is nothing more funny than to see a lcd or plasma chained by the stand!!!!!! There are only four screws holding the unit to the stand.
If your real clever you can use a bump key.

If you're at all clever you'd realize that won't work.

So the alarm will not go off from any smoke let off by the plastic melting, correct? Only if it hits a certain temperature, right?
So a portable soldering iron with precautionary blanket to absorb smoke will be a feasible plan?

Re: Best way to cut plastic?
id break off the handle? seriously if you can see the handle only goes up halfway giving it a snapping point. hold the thing with the handle facing away from you and down (this way so it will swing up to the snapping point \ ) then just set the handle up so its perpendicular to the device, and sing ONLY THE HANDLE against the wall. and boom youre home free.
good luck
