Web browsing trouble
Recently my computers internet connection has been randomly fucking up. After a few hours of working perfectly, web browsing suddenly stops working. The computer is still connected to the router, and open connections aren't effected (by that I mean messenger, ventrilo, active downloads etc). I cannot connect to any websites using Firefox or IE. Any diagnosis or suggestions?

Re: Web browsing trouble
Dude sounds like a stupidly obscure Windows bug. You run Xp, right?
Edit: If so, I hope you realise how hopelessly, offensively arrogant it is to to post about your "computer" without even specifying the OS. Right now we're nearly used to it, if it fucks up for no good reason, it must be Microsoft.

Re: Web browsing trouble
If you're still connected and other network applications are working, and the ONLY issue are webpages, it could be a DNS issue.
To test this, obtains the IP Addresses of some well known webpages (http://www.google.com/ or whatever) and when your web browsing goes down, type the IP into the URL bar on Firefox/IE. If you can get to the website via the IP Address but not the URL, then its likely a DNS issue.
To remedy this, when your internet IS working, search for some DNS servers. When you find one you like, and get its IP Address, you can go to your Network Connections -> Properties -> Use Specified DNS Server -> Type in the DNS IP you obtained. Click Apply, Ok, etc, and give it a shot when the browsing goes down again.
EDIT:
Here's a list of public DNS servers
http://www.tech-faq.com/public-dns-servers.shtml
Hope this help!

Re: Web browsing trouble
Excellent post H2SO4. Please stick around
I googled for this and got a lot of info. Apparently Vista is as crappy under the hood as it is above it. Microsoft's early attempts at making a TCP/IP stack for Vista were third-world.
If you have internet connection sharing enabled I suggest this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937168/en-us
Otherwise:

This is old RTM stuff, but might help:
The new networking stack contained in Windows Vista, as with many new betas, has some issues. It seems to drop wireless connections and in rare cases block all traffic on wireless routers, requiring a restart of the router itself. I have not experienced this, so perhaps it is concerned only with certain makes of router. To fix these problems, complete the following instructions
WARNING: Please note that this will disable IPv6 connectivity, as well as the Windows Firewall security, and is not recommended unless you are experiencing these issues. This will also invalidate any network related bug reports you file for Windows Vista.
Click Start, settings & Control Panel. Under “Network Centre and Sharing”, Click “Manage Network Connections”
Right click on your network connection (for example: Wireless Network Connection: Local Lan connection.
Click your adapter.
Click on the Power Management tab.
Disable all power management items listed on the Power Management tab.
If asked for permission to open Network Connections, click on Allow.
Go back to the properties window, highlight the following items and press the “Uninstall” button:
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder
Uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"
Press OK.

Give these a shot, let us know if it changes anything.

That is exactly the problem I am having. I set up internet connection sharing a few months ago though, not in the last week or so which is when the problem started. I've been putting off installing service pack 1 for a while because of all the WGA business, looks like now I'm going to have to do it

Why thank you .
I've actually been around for a very long time, under a different name (MidnightAssassin) however that was in a more, shall we say, childish mindset .
Took a break from &T for a very long time.
And I'm actually sorta curious if toothless_grin = toothlessjoe?
