On Plato's sentence.
Plato: the goal of philosophy is to ground absolutes from the transient material.
Identity and congress are the first and final secrets of nature, which seem by instinct to abdicate each other; the one may be called, the fulfillment of Reason, the latter the presentiment of science, or Understanding. Identity runs through all ambuscades and contrasts in Nature as numen, and individuates her laws. Whilst astronomy and enterology, being pensile in the Intellect, characterize the history of Nature for man, so Man is the oracle and discoverer of Nature's secrets. Thus we might also say that Society is the recantation of Fate. A perfect self- knowledge contravenes moral law. To live in seipso totus terres atque rotundus, that is, with an utter self determination, causes the moral law to assume the form of moral being.
Every topical and indeterminate proposition contains somewhat poetry, it excites the philosophic imagination. The laws of Science must be discovered under a presentiment, before they can be verified by correspondence with natural facts. Thus the percept of individuation in Nature's laws, as in causes and consequences, is but the introduction of the mind to the universal identity, as in Time.
