Default Favorite Series appriciation thread

In this thread we write about our favorite series and why we wuv them so much. And why others should check them out ofcourse :]

The King of Queens.
When i saw it the first time, i thought it would just be another of those retarded shows like friends, or the piles of other worthless shit that spew from the asshole that is hollywood. But this one is actually very humorous. Maybe because i have a friend exactly like doug. But all of the characters are just so well done, and how they interact. Nothing short of fantastic.

Kenny vs Spenny.
Pure uncut awesome. There is nothing like seeing 2 grown men tumble around like children and humiliate each other over and over. And every episode is up on utube to boot.
http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...rch_type=&aq=f

Futurama.
No explonation needed.

Spawn.
Short cartoon series, drawn in the style of shows like batman, spiderman etc. But with much more gore and more awesum characters.

More maybe added later.

South Park. Sure, the first few episodes were kind of slapstickly (sp?) retarded, but in recent years, its getting better and better. From the start, it was supposed to be adults only, so a lot of the more distasteful (well, to the majority of the population) jokes can be incorporated with cartoon style humour. This is seamlessly incorporated into modern satire, making it an awesome show.

Battlestar galactica. Definitely better than the old series it was inspired from. I like sci fi's, but i keep seeing many of them delve deeper into the fantasy genre. BSG doesnt do this, prefereing to stick to good old drama.

McGyver. enough said.

Futurama: Classic characters, great quotes, just fucking awesome.

Home Movies: Probably one of the most sharply written shows ever, there are so many hilarious characters and memorable quotes.

The Simpsons: yeah, yeah, yeah the new episodes suck we all know that but there was a time when this was a half hour of the funniest and most well written comedy of all time. It mixed allot of social satire with its writing like South Park but allot more suddle.

Venture Bros.: I love this show, the natural-sounding dialogue, the pop-culture references, just a great show.

It's always sunny in Philadelphia: seriously, this is the greatest show on television right now, Charlie is the greatest non-cartoon character I've ever seen.

The Beverly Hilbillies

Best show ever put on television, IMO, for reasons too numerous to list. Started going downhill when Drysdale's character started being too cartoonishly greedy, but the old black and whites were pure gold.

Columbo

The best "cops and robbers" show of all time. Great actor, great plots.

Currently, I like Burn Notice. Smart and funny, and with Bruce Campbell, how can you go wrong?

Honorable mentions to Green Acres, Gilligan's Island, Kolchack: The Night Stalker, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and a special tip of the hat to Night Stand with Dick Dietrich. I wish I could find that on DVD, VHS, anything. I'd buy a Betamax if I could find beta tapes of Night Stand.

Great thread. I've been meaning to do something like this myself.

1.) Deadwood - The G.O.A.T. One of the most ambitious shows ever produced, with by far the most star studded cast and complex scripts. Every single aspect of this show is leagues ahead of anything that came before it, and anything that's been done since.

2.) The Twilight Zone - Really, is any explanation needed?

3.) The Larry Sanders Show - To quote tommy shales (famous washington post tv critic featured in an episode of LSS) "Bitterly, brutally, blatantly hilarious." Taking cues from Fernwood 2 Night it was the inspiration, influence, and spiritual predecessor to Curb, and left a significant mark on virtually every quality sitcom that's come since. Plus, it was a launching point for jeff tambor, one of my comedy idols.

4.) Twin Peaks - Another show that doesn't need much explaining, there will never be anything like peaks. Bizarre, terrifying, and hilarious, it introduced us to Special Agent Dale Cooper, one of tv's greatest characters.

5.) Curb Your Enthusiasm - An R-rated Seinfeld featuring the comedy stylings of the great larry david. Why didn't I think of that?

6.) The Sopranos - Considered by many to be the Citizen Kane of tv. One of the deepest and most complex shows you'll find, for some reason it's commonly overlooked by lots of people.

7.) The Wire - The best cop show ever. Not a big surprise, since there hasn't been a cop show with 2/3 as much money thrown at it.

8.)Batman the Animated Series - BTAS absolutely owned me in the 90's. The best work from bruce timm and co., I've never met a male 16-25 that didn't absolutely love this show.

9.) Homicide - The predecessor to the Wire, this was one of those rare properties where I actually read the book first. Featuring the great andre braugher as frank pembleton, another one of tv's greatest characters (maybe that should have it's own thread) it was the grittiest show since Hill Street Blues, and one of the first shows to use the city it's filmed in (baltimore) as a character itself.

10.) The Venture Bros. - In my opinion, Team Venture is the best thing since the Simpsons. Unbelievable art, characters design and writing, I can't get enough of this fucking show. Bring on the goddamn merchandising!

edit: Honorable Mentions: the original Star Trek, Hill Street Blues, Ren & Stimpy, The Tick, Arrested Development,

Arrested Development - This show is ME! Every time I thought I'd seen the best of it the show would come up with some crazy twist on a joke on a twist on a twist on a joke and would leave me dumbfounded. It's not just that it's a great show, it's also because it makes me wonder what the hell other scriptwriters are doing with their time...

Home Movies is retroscripted, which means it's scripts are vague outlines and the actors improvise dialogue, like Curb and ATHF.

Lately it's:

Spaced: Wish I hadn't waited so long to watch it, too bad it's now over.

The Shield: Re-watching series 2-4 right now awaiting delivery of 5 on Monday, awesome.

Brotherhood: Not watched any for a week or so because of being away and bad torrents, but it's excellent so far.

The Black Donnelleys: It's so fucked that it didn't get renewed after series 1.

I've been planning to get into some of the shows mentioned already, namely: Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and the Wire.

Dexter: Good story, interesting characters who are played quite well and the black humour is well done but doesn't take over and turn it into a comedy series.

Blackadder II: The funniest of the entire series. And it had Baldrick, what's not to like?!

Red Dwarf: Absolutely hilarious, even though the last season wasn't that great it was still funny. My only complaint was how the series ended. But 8 seasons, that's a long time for a show on the BBC that isn't a cop drama or soap.

Beavis And Butthead: Short bursts of extreme fucking stupidity, immature jokes that are just so bad you can't help but laugh.

Mythbusters: It's interesting, although my only complaint is that foxtel seems to play the same 5 episodes over and over again.

The Simpsons: In it's prime there was NOTHING that could beat this show.

I'm sure there's more, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

EDIT: FUCK, I forgot Father Ted. It's been one of my favourite shows since I was probably 8 or 9, fucking hilarious.

I'd be happy to make a top ten list, but I'd have to ponder over it for days, and i doubt many people on totse would have heard of most of the shows.

I'd be prepared to say at least a couple of these would be in there:

Red Dwarf
Blackadder
Father Ted
The Office
Dr Who
Only Fools and Horses

I say do it anyway. I've had an article cooking for my paper for over a year of "The 100 Greatest TV Shows" accompanied by an essay on serial television PLUS each show has to have a paragraph written about it. The list so far includes over 125 shows, and I'm ashamed to say that foreign tv is grossly underrepresented.

Just so all of you guys understand, every single show that's been mentioned here that I haven't seen (so far just some of the UK shows) I'm going to watch all the way through.

Forgot to say I recently watched the first 2 seasons of City of Men (Cidade Dos Homens), the Brazilian TV series. I'm not sure I enjoyed it as much as the film, but I definetly enjoyed it for longer. I mention it mostly for ganjaninja, as he said their weren't that many foreign series on his list. I recommend it.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Some of my favorite lesser-known series: Mind of the Married Man (possibly a thread about this later), Touching Evil (the U.S version with jeff donovan prod. by bruno willis), Huff (hank azaria and the Platt) and 1st and Ten (O.J.).

Twin Peaks is my favorite TV series of all-time. Other shows have made me laugh my ass off (In Living Color, Upright Citizens Brigade), intrigued the shit out of me (early X-Files, The Wire, Sopranos), made me go "what the fuck?" (Peewee's Playhouse, Quantum Leap), and touched my heart (Cosby, lol), and many others were great all-around, but Twin Peaks is the only one I've seen that combined all these aspects (and so much more) to a degree that truly blew my mind & inspired me to rewatch it over and over. I didn't hesitate one second to shell out the cash for the DVDs when they finally rereleased that shit, it's really an immortal show, so many layers to it. Of course it has its flaws and certain aspects of it haven't aged very well, but for me it's fucking #1, no question.

I haven't seen many UK shows, but I love The Prisoner. Are You Being Served is great to watch while high if you like that kind of weird sexual '70s British humor. Overly gay at times though.

In no particular order:

The King Of Queens
i kind of grew up watching that show, and kevin james is hilarious.

The Office
One of the funniest shows i have ever seen.

Dexter
Everything about this show is perfect, the way every episode is filmed, the acting, the actors, the story, amazing.

Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia
This is by far, the funniest show on tv right now.

Spaced
Every episode is amazing, and the show is just so god damn funny. I didn't want to watch the episode for weeks, because i never wanted the show to end. im glad the american dvd release just came out.

Grounded For Life
Very funny, family show. I can relate the characters

Titus
This is my favorite show of all time. Nothing comes close to this show, titus is my favorite comedian ( right behind andrew dice clay ) And this show is just so serious, and so hilarious.

I've been watching through season 2 on foxtel lately and I'll agree that season 2 isn't as good. I still watch and enjoy it, but Lila just annoys the living shit out of me. I still enjoy the season quite alot, but I just hope that she isn't in the 3rd season.

Black gangs, Mexican gangs, Korean gangs, skinhead-types, and a few serial killers for good measure.
