I hope this short story is appropriate for this forum, I hope you find it amusing/interesting.
I have been looking for a laptop to take to college with me, and I want to install linux on it. I saw a couple on Costco's website that I liked so I decided to go and see if they had them in stock. They didn't and none of the laptops they had seemed to be what I wanted. I noticed that there were two laptops by HP which were identical except one had a Blu-ray and the other had DVD, and the one with the DVD drive was 3 cents more expensive. I asked a sales person if I was looking at the right prices because this confused me and he explained that the Blu-ray one was marked down. He started showing off the computer and I mentioned that I didn't want a Blu-ray drive. I'm on a budget ($1,000), all movies are released on DVD still, and I download movies a lot. Also, I don't think a 17 inch screen can take full advantage of 1080i. The salesman kept trying to sell it to me until I mentioned it was a little out of my price range.
Next, the salesman asked me what programs I was planing on running. When I said I was going to put linux on it, it actually looked like I had hit him. He let out a quick sigh, his eyes rolled back a little and shut, and he put his hand over his face and leaned on the table. It actually took him a couple seconds to regain his composer. He tried to tell me (half-assed) how horrible the linux drivers for the video cards are (doesn't ATI now release linux and windows drivers simultaneously?). I told him since they didn't have what I wanted I would just look on the internet.
That is a true story, I'm not exaggerating his response to me mentioning linux. It was hilarious. Does anyone else have stories about salespeople's reactions to linux? He must love vista though, he actually sold a 2TB external HDD to someone "because putting music on your hard drive will slow down your computer." I haven't used windows in a while, but someone please tell me that isn't true!
