| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Obtaining medical records?
Is this impossible or are there plausible ways to do this? I want to know if someone can hack into my medical records and find out if I have anything.
Never heard of this before. Have any of you?

Re: Obtaining medical records?
I have absolutely no knowledge, but my conjecture:
Hospitals keep records in a closed network, at least if they are smart. Stealing or attempting to steal records is a major offense though; one would be better off getting a doctor to just violate HIPPA.

Re: Obtaining medical records?
This is one of those "Do not pass go, go straight to pound-me-in-the-ass Federal Prison" if you get busted, but Stealing the Network II has a really good chapter about using wifi hacks to crack a hospital network.

Re: Obtaining medical records?
Medical records are normally stored on individual isolated computers or as hard copies. When transferring to other hospitals, a dedicated, secured transmission line is used and the records are heavily encrypted.
It's only possible to obtain medical records by having physical access to the hard drives they are stored on, or a means of cracking AES encryption.
It's just not worth the effort to most criminals.

I've had some of my records transferred by normal FAX machine -- blood test results and the like.
In fact, prescriptions are often sent by FAX, as are claim forms to the insurance companies, etc.

It must be NHS practice-only then.

Re: Obtaining medical records?
It depends on the hospital, I guess. If they're smart, they would use a closed network, but you never know. If you wanted to find out you could theoretically put a small backdoor such as Tiny on a flash drive, and then get a doctor's appointment. I don't know about your hospital, but in mine ever doctor's room has a computer which you're left alone with while waiting for the doctor. If you've packed and crypted it properly, it could work. Then you could snoop around the network from home. Hopefully you know your way around command prompt if you use Tiny, though.
