vhs to dvd question
Ok, so I spent the last hour searching and veiwing and gleaning, but nothing found in the way of.
Here's the deal. I have never been able to go to the movies with the family much, so when the movies came out, then we would get them. I now have a collection of childrens movies spanning the last 20 years. Literally hundreds of movies but all are VHS.
My question is this, what can I do to put them on dvd. I realize that blue ray is the coming format, so I figure that I can at least get away with converting the stuff I paid for and still watch before I cant buy a player any more. I have a downs child that will be watching these for years to come.
I need these converted from VHS to DVD..
ANYONE?

Re: vhs to dvd question
Buy a tv-in card at any computer store. With that, plug your VCR into your computer and start recording (those cards always come equipped with usable programs).
There are loads of tutorials to convert movies to dvds, but I recommend using ConvertXtoDVD.. It's easy and will always get the job done.
Good luck! Those cards cost close to nothing anymore by the way.
Edit: If you have some spare cash, you could buy a VHS-DVD rec combo and do it instantly.

Re: vhs to dvd question
Well, I went out and spent on a sony rdr-vx521 VCR/DVD recorder.
Guess what? It told me that what I was trying to do was copy protected and shut itself off.
What say ye now?
How can I get around that?

On the top of the tape, so not the end that opens up; there's a little square hole. Put some normal tape over it and it should work fine.

Re: vhs to dvd question
It might also have Macrovision copy protection, in which case it's a little bit more tricky to circumvent it.

Almost all major VHS releases have Macrovision.
I would think you could just loopback the AV out to the AV in, but The DVD recorder may have a detection for that.

I've come across a few shitty bargain basement ones which don't have it, but yeah otherwise you're quite right.
Looping the video back won't solve it I'm afraid as the protection is carried in the invisible scan lines of the video signal. You need to pass it through a "cleaning" box and then back in.

oh...
Then you will need to find a De-macrovision box, OP. Good luck.

Re: vhs to dvd question
Ok, so even more money spent in pursuit of preservation. I found this obscure web link from another forum and I think it will get me around the mulberry bush.

Yep, that is exactly what you need. They're sometimes also called video signal cleaners.
