Don't worry,i'm sure it won't be optional so they can pocket all that money people spent for gamer pics and re-charge them for Mii's.

Well, you get the Avatar for free, but I'm sure the clothing will costs points.
"Hey, you can stick with the standard pink and yellow leisure suit, or you can upgrade to some fashionable duds for only 1000 MS points! Your choice, but right now you look like a fag!"
But yeah, I think all of Microsoft's crappy attempts to reach "teh cashuals" were the low point of their conference. Their movie game looked stupid, the redesigned dashboard was completely uninteresting, it was painful watching that bitch on stage singing along to her own song in Lips, and the Avatars are such an obvious "me-too" ploy.
When they actually showed good, hardcore games the show was fucking awesome, but they utterly fail at trying to emulate Nintendo.

Where did you see the keynote at? Is there any place I can download it?
For some reason it's just become tradition for me and my buddies to get stoned and watch E3.

Yeah, avatars are COMPLETELY optional. You can continues to use your old gamercard/gamerpic. Major Nelson confirmed this.
The new dashboard and all those new features look sweet though. (Party system,netflix stuff)
