Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought.

Default Why bother voting?

Looking at the front-runners, I honestly don't understand how anyone would actually want ANY of these idiots as a president. It seems that people only vote for one of them because they align themselves as a republican or democrat, so they vote for who the media pushes into place. Or they vote for the lesser of two evils. Our only choices are the ones that the media decides we should vote on. People don't vote for real people with integrity that stand up for what is right, because they are labeled a spoiler or a nut, and get smeared by the media. No one is elected because they are the smartest or best at what they are doing. Instead we elect lawyers and business men who's jobs only involve shuffling money around. A lot of people know now that campaigns and elections are just a big charade and that the president is placed into office by the elite through the media and funding and mass manipulation. The system is just so fucked that I refuse to play along with the game, and it bothers me to see that hardly anyone else cares. People say I don't have a right to complain about the president or government, because I don't vote... I say your vote doesn't matter anyway.

Because a lot of people sacrificed themselves to give you the freedom to do things like vote. Just do it as a sign of respect. If you don't like the current candidates (a lot of us don't) then just write in your own.

Wouldn't that be even more disrespectful? Besides, if the best reason you can give for me to vote is that it's respectful to people who no longer exist and are completely unaware of our actions, than I see no reason. I don't think the remains (if there are any) of George Washington are really going to pass judgement upon me...Wasn't it George Washington who said "political parties will destroy this country" and your telling ME its disrespectful to vote for something that virtually ALL of the founders disapproved of?

If anything it's disrespectful TO vote, since your supporting something that in all essence goes against the framer's ideology. Not that I really care about showing respect, it's just your logic doesn't add up here...

Although I don't have anything too profound to add, I agree with MR.Kitty and pilotedstate. The system is screwed up, votes don't really count, and I have a right to complain no matter what I do.

i got this invitation on facebook to attend "the 2008 presidential election" and it happened to be sponsored by "engaged citizens".

i laughed. i don't feel as if people who vote obama or mccain are considered "engaged citizens".

Even given a choice between two relatively undesirable outcomes, it is next to impossible that each could be equally undesirable. Pick the one that sucks least.

If everyone who was sick of the two party system voted for someone else, then it's quite possible to get someone else into office. But what are the odds of that happening? Myself, I'm torn between going Obama or a write in. All I know is I don't want anymore republicans in office. Bush & co fucked that party's reputation up for a long time to come.

There is the problem right there. You don't understand why anyone would want either of these guys because you think people, in general, get politics and how campaigns work. Just because the mass media talks to its audience about this stuff, doesn't mean its audience actually gets it. We are in a country where we vote people in based on non-issues. Very very VERY insignificant issues that have nothing to do with our economy, people, or our future standing in the international community.

We vote for people because they look like they belong in front of a bar drinking a bottle of beer. We vote for people based on their experience in digging this country's grave. We vote for people because we are afraid their opponent looks too French. Basically, we are a country full of idiots who are riding on the coattails of the minority intellectual. It just so happens that some of that minority know how to send the image out that they are part of general idiot masses to get the idiot masses to give them authority over one of the three branches of our government.

I see your point, but at the same time... why not just write someone in? It's the same thing as saying "This is pointless and stupid... so I'm going to fuck up the ballot by writing in MY OWN opinion!"

At least you're not in a country where they practically put a gun to your head forcing you to vote a particular way.

We should do what Jesse Ventura suggests and have a "None of the above" option on the ballot. But it probably wouldn't make a difference because people would still vote for the lesser of 2 evils in fear that the more evil will get into office if they don't.
