Dogs and pills
So in the US if a cop wants to search your car without probable cause he has to get permission from the owner. If the owner declines, the cop will get a dog to sniff the outside of the car to smell for drugs. My question: If I had pills in the car, the dog couldn't smell them right? I mean, I don't see how he could.

The dog can smell them, just well.... no dogs are actually trained to sniff out pills.
Unless you meant something like MDMA, then i guess it is a possibility...

Re: Dogs and pills
One time at school a drug dog came into my class and signaled immediately at my teacher's purse. The cop didn't search it, of course, but after he left, our teacher told us it was her prescription that she got filled recently.
A dog can be trained to search for anything with a smell.

Re: Dogs and pills
It can be, but they wont be. The dog didnt sniff out your teachers pills. It costs money to train dogs, and unless your in an area that is know for a high volume of trafficked pills then the K9 isn't going to be doing that. They'd rather spend the money on the basics like training for pot ect.
That's what I think not what I know. I don't really care because i'm not dumb enough to get caught.

Re: Dogs and pills
Well I heard a dog is trained by putting the drug in a tennis ball and playing fetch with him. So I'm thinking, that unless they put hydrocodone and OCs in a tennis ball, the dog is fucked.

How is he an idiot? You're an idiot if you believe the fucking dog smelled those pills. If he knew the distinct scent of pills, he would be sniffing shit out ALL THE TIME because pills smell like whatever they are surrounded by.

Actually that was part of a new drug education campaign, aimed at decreasing Rx abuse.
Drug dogs are not trained to sniff out prescriptions, trust me.
Unless it is a smokable prescription. ;)
You kids are fucking idiots, when a dog smells for drugs they don't concentrate on the psychoactive chemical. Considering pills are mostly binder, and have a wide difference in the active chemicals, across the board.......you kids are fucking numb nuts.

the K9s can sniff out pills if someone trains them to, in fact ANY kind of pill, whether the ones in your area are trained to or not is a different story...

You're the one who asked the question, so now why are you so sure they can't sniff pills? I don't care if they can either way, I was just telling you something that happened at school relating to the question YOU asked. Pills may smell like their surroundings, but they would still have their own smell.

And what is the scent? Binder? Not to mention differences in manufacture process ect....
Marijuana sniffing dogs, do NOT look for the fucking smell of thc, you see.
Much like a pill sniffing dog, will not be trained to sniff out the psycho active chemical.
But, suppose that it has, what benefit is there to training a dog to sniff out a single type of substance which people usually have by legal means?

i never said they do, i wasnt implying they are sniffing out hydrocodone or amphetamine salts
but dogs can be trained to sniff out virtually anything

If you refer to my original post you will realize that I was %99 sure of the question, I just wanted confirmation.

sort of, yes.
the training is slightly more sophisticated but yeah they train the dogs with laced packages and toys.
it's just a game to the dog, they are rewarded by their handler for finding the drug.

Re: Dogs and pills
If they want to get you bad enough when doing an "open air" sniff they can make the dog give off an false alert thus claiming "probable cause" to search the vehicle.
Cops know how to play the game just as well as we do.

Re: Dogs and pills
If you had some MDMA in the car and the dog had been specifically trained to detect it, you would probably be in trouble. However, I think pills would be slightly more difficult for a dog to smell. There are binders and other chemicals often thrown in, and a couple of pills is small amount...
EDIT: Dogs that have been trained to detect MDMA are RARE.
