I hate this piece of shit. It expects you to be Rambo when it comes to the computer.

First off, nothing works. Flash? Fuggedaboutit. Any random thing that works under windows and all the other nixes? Nope, doesn't work. Ok, let's install Wine then. Oh, you can't.

That's fucking right. I'm running an AMD64 CPU and apparently I don't deserve Wine, Flash, or anything else. Fine. Let's just play some music and chill out...

Wait, what's that? You can't play MP3s? That's right, Amarok is gay and doesn't let you play any audio file type. Fair enough...let's just update the xine library then. Oh wait, you can't. It doesn't work on the stable build...just the unstable Lenny.

Sorry, this isn't supposed to be a rant about Debian Etch, the worst piece of shit software ever, whose devs I hope get AIDS and die.

I need a new linux system. Not Ubuntu. I just want something compatible, I hate having the ONLY fucking version and build that doesn't work with ANYTHING.

Fuck. As if that's not bad enough, I've got a 5900XT and apparently that didn't work with etch either. Took a good 3 hours to set up third-party nvidia drivers.

I got all those things working in Ubuntu easy enough, so why not Ubuntu? I mean it pretty much is debian unstable, just with a "a bunch of nigger artwork" as one totsean so eloquently put it.

Go back to windows for a bit, try debian again, fix one issue, go back to windows, fix another, etc. That worked for me when i first started out. I don't go back to windows anymore.

Choose Ubuntu until you are ready for Debian. Debian is pretty good, but methinks it's lacking in support because support-type people picked up and transferred over to the Ubuntu community.

Stop bitching, try VLC. Try mplayer. Try not acting like a fucking noob. You can indeed install WINE in Debian.
And if you don't choose to use Ubuntu, try puppy linux. I think puppy is awesome.

I am whining because many of these features do indeed work on Debian Etch, just not the AMD64 platform. And it was a total bitch to install the video drivers, I couldn't see shit but the terminal, so it's not like I could run google and search for help...

I am also whining a bit because I did jump into Debian with minimal Linux experience. I didn't think it would be so bad. I'm not averse to learning, I just hate that there's no support for Debian Etch out there, hell, on Amarok's website, in the support, explaining how to get MP3 capabilities, you've only got Debian Lenny support. And searching around on the internet, I didn't find anything but 2 sites, and both were about lenny.

It's not a problem, I fixed it, but I had to tediously do "apt-cache search" and anything remotely connected to what might be the problem. apt-cache search mp3. apt-cache search xine. And so forth.

And I believe I've got wine running. It's just fine-tuning now, but I'm certain 6 months ago everyone with AMD64 was saying just don't bother trying.

And there's still no flash.

But yes, if anything, struggling through debian without any community support has been a learning experience. It's like being handed a stick and told to hunt a hundred shark. You learn a lot more than if you've got a squad of harpooneers...

Fedora 9 is pretty good.Never mind, I fixed it. Not really fixed, but it started working later. My ev-do gets god speed too. I thought I read that there was a speed loss.

Ok, so I installed a bunch of shit on Debian, and now XP won't boot. Literally "it's a trap" and it doesn't let me boot, doesn't even give a choice for safe mode or DOS.

What now?

I don't really care for anything on there, just the music and my Firefox bookmarks.

I've got another HDD, I figure I'll install XP on there, and then when I boot from the clean HDD, I'll have access to my old (broken) XP partition, at least the files. I can copy the music then. But where would I find my Firefox bookmarks? Somewhere in the firefox dir or elsewhere?

Seriously, I'm never dual-booting off the same HDD again. Way too many complications. I'll just have one HDD for linux and one for Windows, and when I want to switch, reboot the computer and change the boot priority. That way, there's no way for windows/linux/shitty boot software to fuck anything up.

what the hell did you do? Did you install Debian on the same partition as windows?

Fuck it, it's about time to get a new computer anyway. I'll get 2 HDDs and keep windows and linux separate. They can do whatever they hell they want, but they shouldn't fuck each other's MBR or boot sector if they're on separate HDDs, should they?
