Just pay the deposit and rent in cash, like all the illegals do. Most landlords don't ask questions especially if it's an illegal conversion. As long as you don't cause trouble and pay your rent on time you'll be fine.

I think your best bet would be to find an apartment listed by an individual...not in an apartment complex owned by a large company. My landlord is a realtor who owns just a few properties and he didn't call any of my references or my job to confirm my employment. But the last apartment I rented in a complex called all my references and made me do a bunch of extra shit to get the place.

Also, just call the realtor first and make an appointment to view the apartment. Then you can meet them before you fill anything out and if you make a good first impression, they may not bother with the credit check and stuff. That's been my experience anyway.
