I'm curious as to what happens to pills after they pass the expiration date on the prescription bottle.

Do they not work as good or what?

Pharms stay good for a while, even after their expiration date. However it does depend on their storage conditions, for example a bunch of pills always exposed to light, humidity, extreme changes in temp, etc...that can break them down chemically over time. Even then it still most likely will not be noticeable.

Once some friends and I broke into a local warehouse, and in the basement found penicillin and a few other weird pills that expired around 50 years before i had been born. If you ever have an infection, I'd be happy to send them your way.

I tossed them the other day, actually, which is a pity simply because the old-school glass bottles were so kickass. I'll post pics and send samples if I ever get into the basement of that warehouse again.

Most opiates can last long after their expiration date and still be potent, not too sure on other pills though. Some drugs will degrade to toxic compounds though after a certain period of time, take minocycline for example.

I'd eat opiates if they were 200 years old.
