that chef salad, though pretty, looks hard to eat. i mean cause everything's not mixed up and the bowl is so full as it is.

Meh. Most places I've ever worked as a cook or server present their salads in a similar fashion, and everyone has gotten by just fine. It was more of an exercise in presentation than anything, since I rarely put that kind of effort into a salad.
