is satellite Internet service worth a damn?
It's the only option besides dialup Internet that is available at my parents' house.
Is it worth the $200 installation fee and $40 a month offered by Wildblue?
And are there better satellite Internet providers?

Why don't you make a fucking effort? It's like no one knows what Google is.
Google->Wildblue
First result.
Enter your zip.
Premium pack:
1.5Mbps
17000MB/month cap
To the OP:
It's better, but WildBlue doesn't look like the greatest ISP.
Call your local phone/cable company, and ask them about extending their hi-speed internet service area.
Also, what about DSL? I'm sure the phone company can do something about it.

No, chances are he's in a rural area, if it was going to be profitable for them to offer DSL/high speed service they would, I'm still on 56k and this area will be fore the next 5 years at least simply because its not densely populated enough to justify setting up the boxes and lines. No point in calling unless you can get like 50 or 100 people to do the same within a week just spam the bastards. Actually people here tried that and it didn't work so don't bother.

I have satellite broadband, it's the only option open to me atm. I'd say it's alrite, not a patch on standard services but it all depends on how much you want/need it. I dunno about the service where you are obviously but up here surrounded by mountains i'd say its a lifesaver.

Re: is satellite Internet service worth a damn?
The speed should be faster, but I've read some reviews of some unhappy customers who say it can sometimes be as slow as dial up. Also, the bandwidth limit concerns me. It's never been an issue before and frankly I'm not sure how many megabytes of websites I go through in a day. Exceeding the limit is an issue.
The price isn't that bad. I get $10 off a month for the first year because I'm already a DirecTV customer. The cheapest package would only cost me $40 a month, in addition to a $200 set up fee for the satellite and modem.

The speed is alright but expect terrible latency problems for online games.

That's fine with me. The primary use will be for web browsing, and the occasional mp3 downloads. Nothing too heavy on the bandwidth, and no online gaming.
